Hi guys,

I started to do things I promised to myself that I will never do, building more and more kits same time. I know we all try to avoid that but in reality it is just to .... tempting

So with few projects going on I started a new one, just because I love livery on this one.

Basic kit is not the best you have seen from MFH, panels are not the sharpest one, all ducts and holes are shallow or closed and overall smooth surface of resin is not on the level of usual MFH.

But never the less, interesting subject with nice decals.

Since I am very sensitive on holes and ducts I decided to drill everything I can in order to get "real" look.

So, started with upper air ducts, I used proxxon to thin the shell from inside, used thin drill bits to make borders for hole and cut them out with No. 11 blade.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/PC172979.jpg

Put all things I thought should be on body before primer.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/PC042870.jpg

Drilled holes on lower air ducts (close to exhaust) and made a bit of step on exhaust holes in order to get cowling look and not toy like look of exhaust area.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/PC012865.jpg

I slightly cleaned those winglets and decided to put them on even thou it could make some problems during final steps of clear coats.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/PC042869.jpg

Of course I made the intake hole over drivers head, It was very shallow.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/PC042867.jpg

And of to primer, I made three sand/prime process before I was happy with result on all surfaces.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/PC172972.jpg

Sanded all with 6000 polishing cloth and dryfitted bottom and gearbox.

This is where I stand now.

Great start! Looks much cleaner than mine :) Have you decided what to do about the rear wing support yet?

Hi

This will surely be worth following! :-)

Caution with those winglets behind the air intake. They will be in your way when decaling the huge airbox decals and will be prone to be knocked off. I hope you have fixed them solidly with wire or something?

Anyway good start and nice primercoat. I can recommend the Hiroboy Red Bull colour as very easy to apply and get an even coating.

Nice start!

Is it me or the fin on the engine cover isn't in the right position but a bit to the left of the cover?

very nice start,

to be aware you are gonna most likely have to fix the resin transmission/rear wing support. the support piece is off and will make teh wing sit funny. just as a heads up.

will you be using the STR paint also

cheers,
Steve

ohh yes that will be interesting

I have to admit that I started this kit too, I just couldn't resist... and as some mentioned before check the rear wing alignment. It is usually completely off, you could also check f1m.com there are quite a few progress threads and some useful tips.

You can go through my old posts on my personal site and see what my solution to the rear wing was.
I should be done with my RB4 version and soon, and so far I'm pleased with the results.
Great work and good luck.
And be careful with the white metal pieces! So brittle!

Thank you guys for all valuable information, next step is surely dry fit of rear wing to see the problems.
Paint is bought from hiroboy of course.
Jano, since the fin is very thin I have moved it left and right all the time, no need to worry it can be reshaped with no problem.

Exactly what I was thinking working my way thru this thread. What a contrast before the primer and then after. Great work going on here.

Thanks guys.

Not much happened but I was so inpatient to try that zero paint...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/P2023115.jpg

I must say that paint do look amazing, one pointer thou, since overall shape of painting area is tricky you have to move over it a lot. If you use short and not so rich bursts, you will easily get over spray all over. So thin it down, use short but rich bursts of paint on those hard to get places.

Once you cover it thin down the clear a lot...and I mean a lot, be very careful as it will run if you over do it just a bit.

Here is close up of that fantastic paint from Zero, I tried to balance WB in order to get perfect match.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y27/sjelic/STR3/P2023106.jpg

This is only first lighter coat of clear just as a base for decals, once I get them on I will make another coat.

So decal nightmare to begin :D

Sasa, that color is to die for :droooooooooool:
I can already begin to imagine how tasty this is going to look.
I really need to get me some of Steve's clear coat and try it out at last. Are you using the 2-pack or the 1-pack? What's the difference between them anyway?? :s

I have always had a "thing" for the STR livery and you are seriously tempting my resolve to stay focused with my projects for this year (assuming of course that I find the time to do anything at all  )

Spike2933
02-03-2009, 12:38 PM
very nice, the color is amazing aint it,

the decals are pretty tough, I used solvaset for mine, but I'm positive Microsol will work just as good, the decals also overlap,

just look at mine if you need any tips or placement

Thanks guys ;)

Stevenski, I use Glasurit 2K, usual ratio is 3 parts clear, 3 parts hardener and 8 parts thinner, extremely careful with swift and very rich bursts.

Steve thanks for offer, yours came out very good, it already helped a lot with some doubts I had.

Jochen, I was just kidding in Aston thread :D, I will give my best just to come close to your perfect build.

Thank you once again for kind comments.

Hi guys,

The STR 3 build is very impressive!

I bought one myself some time ago but I have decided that I am not going to build it.

Therefore I am selling my MFH 1/20 STR 3 together with paint from Zero and the complete decal sheet.

Is there anybody interested?

It has been a while since last update :D
sorry for that but lately I am very busy and have very little time to relax.

Never the less here is progress, decals and clear coat on, slightly polished, still room for improvement, since decals are so complex I had to add a bit more clear :(

yeah sure, you can buy them separately, mediamix or hiroboy have them for sure, you will have enough to cover any F1 model.

Looks like I made progress few months to early :D

I have put all big things together and left with details and some dust sanding (I must have more nerves when doing clear job).

Never the last, those are last progress pictures, next ones are of finished model.
Thank you all for following this to long process.

No general problem, you must be careful with wings decals as it is very unclear how the wing should stay (frond and rear side), so test more then once, I know I was taking some of them down :loser:
