93 e150 blower switch problem also loose steering

hello,

I'm looking for some help with a 93 E-150 van that I bought.

1) The A/C and heater blower worked intermittenly when i first bought it. Now it's stopped working altogether. I get nothing when I turn the fan switch on (any setting). I've checked all fused under the dash and in the power block. all are fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2) The steering appears to be really loose. Does this vehicle have an 'idler arm' or something similiar that might be going (or bad)? I'd like to fix it before I get it aligned - or at least know a little something about it BEFORE I take it in to the shop. Again, I'd be very greatful for the guidance.

Welcome to Automotive Forums. If the blower worked only some of the time then it could be a bad connection to the motor. I suspect there was a corroded connector to the motor which would make it heat up and get even more corroded. Finally it gave out. Check the hot wire going to the fan for looseness or corrosion. If it is all right run a + wire directly to the fan motor. If it doesn't run then you know it needs a new motor. If it does run you have either a problem with the switch or the wiring.

The loose steering is usually because the tie rod ends are worn out. They attach to hubs of the wheels. The idler arm supports the center link on the right hand side. The steering arm supports the center link on the left hand side. A little play in the idler arm is all right. If it moves more than an inch up and down it should be replaced. If the play is in the steering gear the sector can be adjusted as long as it is not severely worn. If you move the wheel when the car is at rest and get looseness it could be all of the above. If the car is in motion when the looseness occurs the problem could be worn control arm bushings or ball joints.

When you go for an alignment, the front end man will check for worn parts before he attempts to align it. Usually they will tell you it can't be aligned until the parts it needs are replaced. Ask for an estimate before he does the work. It can get expensive.
of course, you always have the option of replacing the front end parts your self and coming back later for an alignment.

Dave, Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try once the weather warms up above zero. Again thanks! - Paul
