96 windstar 3.8 lights flickering and stalling at idlevashead2000 01-12-2009, 01:18 PM 96 windstar 3.8 has an ongoing problem. Van runs fine down the road but intermitantly dies at stops signs and also if just idleing and you put it in gear it will also stall sometimes. Van does start right back up. Noticed dome lights and headlights are flickering. More of a pulsation really. Computer has been changed. Alternator, according to scan tool is good and battery is new. Also for the stalling there is no air leak issues and also fuel, spark and compression are good. Everything i can think to check appears to be working properly, IAC, IMRC, MAF, EGR, etc. This van previously sat for a period of time. I dont know if the problems are related or not, but it seems so. No codes in computer in previous computer and also the new one. Thinking possibly a ground problem.... If anyone has has simliar problems or know how to fix please let me know. Been searching for this issue for sometime now. searcherrr 01-12-2009, 06:03 PM 96 windstar 3.8 has an ongoing problem. If anyone has has simliar problems or know how to fix please let me know. Been searching for this issue for sometime now. When it stalls is there any notice at all or just cold turkey ... OFF? What's the weather like every time its stalled? RAIN or high humidity? What city r u in? I would thoroughly inspect your grounds, but namely especially the one from the alternator to the frame just above the belt. This bad connection was causing me to have this problem; started with flickering. I had absolutely ZERO notice and the thing would just die. In high humidity and/or rain I had ZERO power inside (not even dome) sporadically .... and I mean not even anything on key turn. All it was, was there was space between the ground strap mount and the alternator body and these alternator bodies (aluminum I think) are not good for grounding to begin with. I've always wanted to double ground the alternator from another spot on it, but never got around to it. The problem with this thing is that it looks so simple, but isn't. You have to dismount the belt to unscrew the bolt that holds the ground strap to the alternator otherwise you will strip the bolt/bore cause of the pressure from the belt tensioner pulling it downward. Going to all this trouble if it were me I'd replace the ground strap with a better ground cable which is what I did. Despite all the other grounds being good and secure, if this ground strap does not have a good connection (frayed, hanging, loose, etc..) your van will not function right or function at all. Be sure your battery is secure and not moving when the van moves. IE: top terminal grounding out against the frame. Had this happen on a car once and would cause the same effect till I got mad and took some hard turns to reproduce the problem (cause it only did it on left turns) and then the battery cable caught fire. What was your fuel pressure at btw? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
