No crank, P0340 code.

Wierd stuff man, I went to start the car tonight, nothing but click click click. Got out and messed with the battery cables to make sure they were tight. Got back in clicked a couple more times then started.

Then I noticed my SES light was on so I pulled the codes and got a P0340 code which is camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction.

Have you guys ever heard of a cam sensor causing a no-crank issue? I sure hadnt.

It cant be my Security system because its disabled. Ignition switch or starter is still up for grabs though.

Things I have done so far:

1. Pulled code, looked up code
2. Cleared code
3. Dared car to pull that crap again.

The P0340 code will set if the PCM does not detect the cam sensor input that could be from loss of power or ground.
If you get a chance try cleaning the battery cable connections at both ends.

Just a thought.

Ill definitely give that a shot. They seemed a tad loose too, I dont like being able to move the cables by hand, and I was able to do that with some force to the POS+ cable.

I may also unplug and re-seat the connector to the cam sensor, its entirely possible that it may have gotten some coolant on it during the thermostat housing escapade, so that might be causing an issue of some kind.

In the mean time Im hoping step 3 will work, it has in the past with a p0420 code:).

Ill let you guys know how it works out.

I changed the camshaft position sensor on my car, I did it long time ago at 83k in 06. It showed the same warning signs during starting so i got it scanned and changed it problem sloved.

According to the Powertrain Control Booklet for the LX5 engine, both the cam and the crank position sensors are used as an input to the PCM to synchronize the ignition system and fuel injectors.

"The CMP sensor signal, when combined wit the CKP sensor signal, enables the PCM to determine exactly whick cylinder is on a firing stoke." "If the CMP signal is absent during cranking, there is a 50% chance of it starting immediately. The CKP sensor will determine which two cylinders are at TDC, but the PCM doesn't know which one is compression and which is on exhaust. The PCM will fire one of the two cylinders. If an increase in RPM is detected, the correct cylinder was fired, If no engine RPM increase is detected, the sequence is reversed. If the right cylinder was not selected on the first attempt cranking time may be longer than normal"

Isn't this sensor right below the coolant bottle, to the left of the water pump pully?

It's possible that it could be wet, or having problems with this cold weather.

While it doesn't seem like it would completely disable the car starting it will definately cause it to crank longer.

Right, hard-starting or long-cranking would make perfect sense to me, its the not cranking at all that was messing with my brain.

It hasnt done it since then, I think the car is scared of me.

I think its all in your head man...grab some beers and your problems will disappear! :iceslolan

but i agree getting a no-crank situation does not seem much like a camshaft sensor malfunction, i mean it should still crank over even if it doesnt start. If you could move the terminal by hand, in my experience that is all that is needed to make a bad enough connection to keep the starter from cranking the engine.

Clean off the battery, starter and ground terminals without killing yourself with a wire brush. Use dialectric grease and/or coat the terminals with a covering (rubber crap, red spray etc). Clean and check that CPS. Challange the CPS to go bad.

With an older car corrosion becomes more of the issue.

With a bad Intrigue cps usually it just cranks and cranks and will then start. Other cars it will die while running and/or refuse to start.
