Hi,
First I'd like to say hello as I'm new here, although Ive spent the last week seaching the forum for subjects I'm working on and cars I'd like to do in the future. Now the first thing that strikes me is your models here are just superb, I have the utmost respect for the quality, no, the museum quality I've seen, I hope to learn alot more than I know:)
My name is Colin and I'm 41, UK based, I spent my childhood making models, from tanks to aircraft (Spitfire's & Lancaster Bombers) oh and the occasional Star Wars model, all original 70's Tamiya kits, all now gone!
Ive been working on wooden model ships (HMS Bounty) from a partworks, well it's been a labour of love for 11 odd years and as the cold snap has prevented me from going into the outside workshop I picked up a gift from my son from around 10 years ago...Ferrari F189, the 1/20 scale.
I just love F1, more so the 60's and 70's, I collect old races on DVD and have a nice collection that my family just love..mmmmm

So I started after a long, long break of plastic model making giving this Ferrari a bash, Ive seen some incredible models around here, pure insperation for me I can tell you, (billypee being just one).
My skill is limted by a number of factors, money being one and as such I don't have an airbrush, only the Tamiya Ferrari red to spray the main body, well the can was as old as the kit so it of screwed up a little (pic later eh!)

Im on the engine, using just a brush, Im sort of happy so far, I'll be trying to add a little more detail as per original pictures I have (low res), I'm hoping It'll turn out ok, but I'm in need of some advice of certain subjects, I ask as I post pictures.
Give me a while to post some pics.

The engine looks really good, especially given that you brush painted the whole thing. Keep us posted on how you go.

Thanks Billypee, Ive been on your web site and some of the images are missing.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I have been having problems with Sandvox losing track of what needed to be loaded (and what didn't) so, last week, I decided to delete everything on the Web server and start again. Now I am having problems getting all the Website transferred back again! Keep checking as I'd reckon it will all be loaded within the week.

Thanks once again for your kind words,
Bill

Ive been working on the body of the car over the past week or so, plus a little on the inside...pics to follow.

Originally I had a can of spray with this kit, but years took its toll, my first attempt was a disaster, I didnt wash before spraying or use primer, you can guess the out come.
I took it to work to clean the srapy off with some IPA Alcohol, didnt work, then I tried some MEK, bugger it! busted a bit.
I decided to pick up some micro mesh from Hiroboy.com and started to sand back the mess..wow, it worked.
now onto the spray proper, I got a can of Grey primer and slowly primed, sanded, filled, primer...it started to look like I may have saved the model.
I read that white primer was better for light colours, well ferrari's are red so I picked up some cheap white primer, I wasnt to happy with the result but small steps I guess.
I also bought a can of red spray (new this time) and folowed the excellent tutorial on the Italianhorses web site. Small ammounts (mists) at a time and I'm totaly impressed so far.
One thing I noticed, the lack of control over the sray outta the can..arghh
I got my ABROO5 sraymaster airbrush this morning, a few more weeks and I'll get a comressor.

I'll post some pictures later.

Cheers

Ok, first mishtake!!!
I used Humbrol Grey Acrylic primer x2 then a white primer x2, but looking at the white primer I got it was enamel based, that why I have a very fine texture to the body..mmmmm
I suppose keep it one or another.

I used the micro mesh from Hiroboy, so glad I got them, not perfect, but I'm happy.

Well, thats the story so far, now just to get this right, Ive made models right through the 70's, from military to Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, oh and motorcycle here and there...but never an F1 car...this belive it or not my first.
I know some mishtake were made, I know what they are, my next model (Ferrari 312 T3 1/20) will be better.

I'm enjoying this hobby again, and amaze at the quality of the models here, they, you are an insperation.

Cheers

Could someone give me some idea how I could go about adding some of the plumbing (see pic below)

Try using some thicker (the right thickness) wire, it should do the job easily and you might not have to paint, polishing could be enough.

Solder of the proper diameter is better because it easy to bend. The ends could be flattened where they attach to the radiators with a apir of smooth jaw pliers. The blue couplings can be made from wire insulation or Heat shrink tubing. Use Acrylics to paint the tubing, enamels won't dry and laquers are too brittle.

thanks for those ideas, I like the idea of solder.

I think solder is going to be the easiest material to work with and would be my choice.

Alternatively, you can purchase styrene rods of various diameters and use a naked flame to soften and bend to shape; sometimes sprue is the perfect diameter. Another option is to use brass tubing but, unless you are very skilled, bending it just results in crimping.

I'm gonna get some solder tomorrow, I think it';s the best choice.
Another question for ya!

Halfords primer and various colours sray cans, are they Acrylic or Enamals?

thanks for the replys by the way.

They are acrylic; use them as you would Tamiya's TS-nn paints.

I'v not had much time on finishing the F189, but I have made a few more pics and created a photobucket web site thingy.

http://s680.photobucket.com/albums/vv161/zeptrader/

I have the Ferrari F189 progress shots, plus the Airfix McLaren (Hamiltons) model, I took me 3 mins to do, but I love it (xmas gift from the wife), plus a card model of the Tyrrell P34 I'm still doing.

Other pics include some photoshoped screen shots of a PC game called GP Legends and GT Legends.

I've been waiting to finish this model off for some time, I was going to clear over the whole body and wings, but had this feeling I's better check, so I got a few of the decals I didnt use and placed them on a little bit of styrene sheet.
Now all I had to do was spray and see how it affects the decals, well within a few seconds....!!!!!

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv161/zeptrader/Tamiya%20120%20Ferrari%20F189%20late%20version/100_1343.jpg

Pretty chomprehensive I think, damn I'm glad I did'nt go straight to the model. Lesson learnt and nothing buggered.
I'll now leave the model as is and post some pics later today.

Just for the record these were the original decals, plus I used decalfix from Humbrol and Humbrol gloss varnish, now if I used the wrong type of varnish please tell me, I'm still new to some of these methods:)

Thanks for advice from folks around here:)

There was so much more I could have done, but to be honest I just wanted to get this done, not much in the way of interior details, not to confident.

Cheers
Colin
