Revell 1/24 Ferrari F2007 (Massa - Bahrain)

Hi! I'm back with another racer after my recent project R32 Axia. I just have to have a Ferrari in my collection and it'd also be nice if I had a formula one...
That's why I bought a Ferrari F2007. It includes USA, UK and Brasil? (if I'm not wrong) versions with Cartograf decals. I bought "Museum Collection"
sponsor decals to go with it.
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007spnzr.jpg

Because of the decals I decided to make two versions of racers:
- Massa's Bahrain ride with Ferrari Red color
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007_brn.jpg

- Räikkönen's Brazil winning ride with almost all the body mods which were made throughout the 2007 season - metallic candy red color
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007brazilmassa2.jpg

I'll let the images talk for me. :)

Thinning of plastics is necessary:

The cockpit's bottom was modified because of the bad molds:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_09.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_10.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_12.jpg

I removed the molded seatbelts:

Mockup with underbody:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_14.jpg

I'll have to redesign the muffler tips because the molded pipes are horrible:

Does anyone know what is the meaning of the tire marking (red/green)?

Two days ago I started playing with Cartograf's carbon. Carbon's dimensions are very tight and
do not aloow any mistakes. Position of the carbon is the thing you have to be very careful with because if
you don't fit it right, the wheel stabilizers will have no carbon at top view. I used Microset and Microsol to do the job:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_17.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_18.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_19.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_20.jpg

The last picture shows wheel fitting which is quite good - remember it's Revell! The only problem
is with the body/underbody fitting because it's a little "tense". That's why I had to use masking tape. :-?
Guess I'll have to take a closer look at the construction of my racer. ;)

Does anyone know what is the meaning of the tire marking (red/green)?

The letter R should be rear, the arrow -> is where the tire will roll and the number 5 should be the tire set number, but it's totally guess... I don't know. :uhoh:

ales

(Pure speculation) "5" could also be the car number and red and green could indicate the tyre compounds (even if that would seem somewhat redundant with the white grove and all).

Great progress, by the way.

Very nice start, looking really good so far. When I built this kit a while ago I cut off the molded exhaust tips and replaced them with some brass tubing which worked quite nicely.

Thanks for comments! They really keep me motivated. :iceslolan

Because of the low temperature (-14°C/57.2°F) I can't paint anything. :( Luckily I found another Revell tipycal
mistake - thick rim spokes. So I started thinning with scalpel and finally managed to damage one of the rim spoke,
on the last rim. :) I used the rear rims for training because they're covered with the carbon plate for cooling of the brakes.

The original rim is on the right:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_22.jpg

Damaged rim is located on the left bottom position:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_23.jpg

This is how the real rims look like:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_24.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_25.jpg

About the tyres...

My theory is that they use red markings for training and green for race. I agree with AAlmeida that
the number is for tire sets:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eor6UaJ_VGU&feature=related

I guess I should mark tyres like this L<-5 / R -> 5 for racing purpose and L<-5 / R -> 5 for training purpose.

Hello guys!
I'm back with some progress and modifications. :) I've managed to do the following mods and painting in
three days - I hope that excuse is good enough for the mistakes I've made.

Modifications:

- front wing

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_22-1.jpg

- rear wing needed some "downgrading" for the Bahrain race:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_23-1.jpg

- thinned down the rear diffuser
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_24-1.jpg

- white primer
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_25-1.jpg

- red Tamiya (X-7)
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_26.jpg

- decals (Musem Collection + Revell's Cartograf)
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_27.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_28.jpg

Now I have to wait for the decals to set down and clean the remaining MicroSet before clearcoating.
Does anybody have any idea, how to do that? I was thinking about mild soapwater...

Wow, it looks awesome with the decals. I dunno if soapy water will do what you want, but make sure you really ***really*** rinse it off long and well - because I guarantee it will leave soapy residue in corners and cracks if you're not careful. Inspect it carefully after it has dried.

Tibi Keke

Yes, it works quite well with soapy warm water. Then clean'it well with clean water and put the model in a dust free place to dry for a few days.

Thanks for conformation Tibi Keke and to you to mrawl for such a quick response! I'll try it tomorrow just before I'll put the front wings into
Tamiya's red. I can hardly wait to see it in my gallery. :)

You can clean the body with Windex, and then use wax to bring out the shine and protect the decals. It works for me.

Thanks for the tip sam01contact. Because I don't have any window cleaner at home ATM ,
I gave the mild soapwater method a try. It didn't do a thing so I just cleaned (degrased)
the surface and lef it as it was before.

Today's work was mainly about the PE seatbelts and preparing the body for clearcoat. I had to paint
the black surfaces with the Tamiya's semi-gloss black around exhaust pipes and do some minor corrections
under the wings on the body.

This is how mockup of the cockpit looked like before the clearcoat:

I aslo spotted a mistake in Revell's decal instructions for placing the two Bridgestone wing decals:

Hi Tibi Keke!

Yes, the body is clearcoated at the moment with Zero's 2k lacquer. You can see the result here:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_32.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_33.jpg http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_34.jpg

Well that's great to hear that another fellow modeler is planning to build the same kit. If you'll need
any advice regarding this F2007, feel free to ask. I've got pretty much figured out the 2007 changes.
The Ferrari changed color in 2007 season, a lot of body modifications have also been made... Be carefull
if you plan to make an authentic build - the string logos were used only in Bahrain, Monaco and China.
You should also pay attention to the wing/spoilers change throughout the season... It's best to take a look
at the www.formula1.com and look at the specific race gallery (http://www.formula1.com/gallery/race/2007/) and the technical modifications (http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2007/).

Thanks for watching!

Here's a mockup of the clearcoated body and front wing. The grey flaps on the front wing are there
only for fitting before sanding and painting.

Still have to paint these, put on some decals and clearcoat some things (plus I still have to paint the
steering wheel):

ALU exhaust pipes:

Still have to paint some things:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o299/giantstormer/Ferrari%20F2007/f2007wip_48.jpg

This is just a mockup - tomorrow I'll glue the body and underbody and rear light, make the antennas and pitot,
put BMF inside the mirrors, glue in the spoiler above the driver and correct wash on the spoiler.

Still a lot of work to be done...:eek7:

Thank you both for comments!
It was finished on Friday last week and presented on SVM - a local contest (pics and statistics will follow) (http://svm.si/en/).
I'll take some time later today and make some more pics of my F2007. In the meanwhile you are invited
to take a look at the contest's pics (click on the picture):

It's finally finished!! If I calculate how much working time was spent for this project, I'd add up to about 70 hours.
It definately has to be thinned down properly to look better but it goes together easily. The rear spoiler
has to go onto the body last as well as the front two little wings on each side of the nose. The main vent
guards also go on last because it decreases the risk of damaging them when working on the antennas.
When inserting the cockpit (Tibi Keke), you have to put it in before closing the inside of the main vents
(they're made from two pieces - upper and lower half). You also need to figure out the painting order
because there is a lot of two-tone pieces. You can see the order through my build diary.
I used „Museum Collection“ sponsor decals (very thin and not so flexible - easily brakable), aluminium tube
for exhaust and „Scale Motorsport“ PE seatbelt. Body is painted with Tamiya's acrylic paints, Zero paints 2k lacquer and MM's matted lacquer on the wheels.

List of modifications

cockpit
- grinder off the molded seatbelts and replaced them with PE
- added map of Bahrain circuit
- added a Ferrari decal on the steering wheel
chassis
- thinning of the rim spokes
- sanded down the tyres
- thinned down wheel arms, rear end and difusor
- added new squares of styrene below the front axis
body
- opened the vent above the driver
- aluminium exhaust pipes
- modified rear spoiler - actually it was downgraded because Revell provided the spoiler from the late half of the season
- made a rounded line on the bottom of the front wing's sides
- added sponsor decals
- correctly positioned the Bridgestone decals on the rear end of the body
- weathered body of the F2007
- added the antennas and Pitot tube

I placed third in the local contest with it:

I can see that I misplaced the main sponsor logo (behind the driver) and that there is some fluorescent orange
missing above the driver and that the tyres could be better but that's the peak of my concentration and skills
at the moment. :)

Hope you like it...
