Relay

We just got a new motor for the trunk hatch..and it worked 3-4 times then we came back an hour later and tested it out. It stoped working..We ended up bypassing the relay and the hatch motor worked just fine..but only in one direction ( closing the hatch).so after a few more hours of testing we found out the relay was blown..

What would cause the relay to work for a little bit but then end up blowing??
thanks.

Well, the relay is 20+ years old and either finally fried the windings or a set of contactors went bad.
Check Top Down Solutions for any and all parts you may need. Lon (the owner) is a real stand up guy and fantastic to do business with (we need a lot more like him). http://www.top-downsolutions.com/

OK, if the relays we get from the Junk Yard do not work, we will order from him.

Another question on relays. In order to get the fuel gauge working, we had to bypass the fuel relay. Now the gauge works from 1/2 to empty but will not go clear to full.

Does the fuel relay effect that?

In other words, if we put in a working fuel relay, might the fuel gauge go clear to full?

Thank you for the help.

This is my dad :banghead: working on this car with me.

What "fuel relay"? If you mean the fuel pump relay (only one in the fuel system) then something is wired wrong. The pump relay has nothing to do with the gauge operation. Check the grounds for the instruments and for the sending unit. A poor ground will make it read wrong since the gas gauge is nothing more than an ohm meter.

ok the relay is right under the hatch motor..looking from the back it will be on the lefthand side and right beside the motor if not a little lower..
