WIP: 1/12 Tyrrell-Ford 006

I havenīt been posting any WIPs for a long time but now I have finally got the motivation back to start something new ! :worship:

And my new project is the Tyrrell-Ford 006 that raced in the F1-series back in 1973. But since thereīs no manufacturer making this kit (as far as I know), I am using the Tamiya Tyrrell 003 as a base. Tyrrell used the 003 during the ī71 and through half the ī72 season. The Tyrrell 003 looks like this:

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/7532/img3476uk7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And Iīm going to convert this into the Tyrrell 006 which is my favourite F1-racer of all time.
The Tyrrell 006 looks like this:

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7042/img3484uf6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

As you can see I have the work cut out for me.. :-P

..So I started by modifying the front-cowling.

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9201/p1000218sn1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And then I moved on to slowly starting to re-work the new suspension-system which is brand new for the 006. And so far I have only made the top part and itīs still in the "workshop". :)

The real thing:
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/4503/pict3168fl7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The 1/12:
http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/7275/p1000216hc1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And Now Iīm working on the "cockpit-area". And so far itīs slowly taking shape.. No problems, what so ever, so far.. I am used to scratchbuilding and Iīm also used to having ALOT of problems.. So Iīm quite surprised.

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/1363/p1000214oz8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And a quick mock-up.. Iīm quite happy with it right now. But as you can see.. ALOT of work to be done.. so.. Stay tuned ! :D

Good start.

You will need other tyres though. From a later kit like the M23, BT44, Wolf, Lotus 78. You should be able to get a set from Rainbow Ten.

Nice work.

I like that version too and I have a 1/20 scale transkit to make one out of the 6 wheeler.

Hmm

Should that be a Fiotti models transkit by the way? If so, you can use it as target practice. It has only a vague resemblance of the real thing...

There is a 1:20 kit by AMD which is better - but far from Model Factory Hiro quality.

The Fiotti transkit really sucks:crying: . Several years ago it got a special location in my big stock - in the bin.:banghead:

That's prolly the one...it is rather crude but workable.

Since I've had it for way over ten years I doubt I'll ever get around to building it.

My love affair with F1 cars is fading.:crying:

UPDATE !

I have puttied the front and the cockpit and started to sand it and shape it to the desired shape.

I had to raise the cockpit by 3mm to clear the suspension-fittings and now it is looking more like the original ! :)

I did a quick mock-up with the engine and now it´s starting to look like a F1-racer :)

http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/9290/p1000255gl6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Here you can see the difference between the old and the new look. It´s a bit higher :)

Why should I use other tires? :S Regulations?

Well, the car you are basing the conversion on is from 1971 and the 006 is 1973 vintage. Tyres evolved much in that period. 1971 tyres are not proper 70's slicks. Compare pictures from 1971 with 1973. The most obvious difference is the rear tyres. But the layout of both fronts and rears are different.

UPDATE !

Got a lot done this evening and yesterday I managed to almost finish the front cowling. A little bit left.. :)

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/5088/p1000260ac6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I also started to build the air-scoop and got the basic shape with the help och plastic styrene. :)

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4592/p1000262mq9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/p1000262mq9.jpg/1/w640.png (http://g.imageshack.us/img152/p1000262mq9.jpg/1/)

And also started to build the "cage" of the cowling over the driver´s position. :)

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/7505/p1000258hs6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And as always.. a quick mock-up to see how it looks.. Really happy with it so far !

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/5985/p1000265sw4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

It is actually starting to look like the 006 now ! :yikes:

UPDATE !

Itīs been a while but now I have finally started making some visable progress.. :)

I have been working on the front suspenison-area.. So now it actually looks like the real deal so far :)

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/8610/p1000340.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000340.jpg)

I have cut the brakediscs into two parts also.. I seperated the centerpiece from the actual disc.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/9332/p1000332.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000332.jpg)

I also started to reshape the shape of the seat.. Tamiya made the seat in some kind of soft plastic that almost feels like rubber so itīs hard to glue and putty it.. =/

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/7713/p1000337.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000337.jpg)

I have also made the driver-lid or whatever itīs called.. and I started working on the sidepods too. The cockpit is pretty much finished, so here is a small mock-up of the pieces :)

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/1773/p1000351m.jpg (http://img14.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000351m.jpg)

And it works too !! :)
Just have to fit the shock-absorber and the springs :)

Hi everybody ! :)

I am just going to tell you that I am bringing this back from the dead ! ;) I havenīt been modeling for a while because of the lack of motivation.. but now I have put this up on the workbench again :)

I am working on the frontclip right now.. trying to short it down a bit.. since it was a bit to long from the start.. I will post some pictures of it when that is done ! :)

I have split the post from the other builder into his own thread. Rickard and Tyrell now have their own threads.
