Does the actuator motor run if you manually step through the ranges with the switches? You should be able to hear it with the ignition on and engine off.

The next question is whether the transfer case is actually in neutral or if the transmission is not engaging. The infamous reactions sun gear and shell problem can cause the same symptoms.

You could unbolt the actuator motor plate and manually place the transfer case in a range to find out, or observe the action with the vehicle on stands of a lift.

Fuse good?
Got any shift button lights or service 4W lights?

Found out that it was the transfer case motor. not working at all, back of plate broken and all gummed up. fuse was also good but did have a service 4 wheel light. Seems to be working fine after replacing the shift motor and replaceing the case fluid and differencial fluid while i was at it . Thanks for the help guys, greatfully apperciated.
