97 blazer 4x4 40,000 miles with push button 4hi and 4lo the problem is it will engage in 4hi when needed and back to 2hi after a few times of doing this it wont engage in 4hi. 4lo still works but no 4hi. But if i disconect the battery for a few minutes and reconnect it works again for a while then after a few times of engaging 4hi and back to 2hi its back to the same problem. why does disconecting the battery reset the problem?

It clears codes that shut down shifting and lets it do it thing again?

Is this the auto 4W or reg transfer case?
Reg transfer case codes can be pulled by grounding pin 13 on diagnostic connector and counting blinks shift button lights.
Post back any codes.

On the auto 4W if a sensor is off it sets a code and disables transfer case shifting.

You will need a transfer case capable scanner for it to test out transfer case shifting and to get codes.
Post back any codes it has.

A good repair shop or dealer should have the transfer case capable scanner.

If they know what they are doing they will know how to check it.

Tips on finding a good repair shop or dealer.
Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.
So ask before going to them.

The automtic transfer case has the Auto 4W button.
Also back of transfer case has a ID tag.
233 is regular.
236 is automatic 4W
