I have a 99 Int. for approx 2 yrs. recently has been getting stuck in "P".
Today it got stuck and stayed stuck. For example, today @ a drive-up atm, it got stuck w/ car running but in P it finally went into drive but not w/out some doin's. I had ppl tell me torque lock, some sort of sensor, fuses...etc.
I picked D- none the above .....Please help....arghhh!!!

What have you looked for so far? Is there not a solenoid down at the shifter that operates when the brake is pressed? I think this has been discussed before.

Thanks for replying Hoppy2, I have pulled the console cvr. off, poked around in there, but I couldn't really get to anything w/ the tools i had at the time.
This solenoid, is located further in to the console or by the brake pedal under carpet? I am going to look a little more. Thanks again!

The solenoid will be in the console. But what do you mean when you say it gets stuck? Are you actually able move the shifter up and down, but the transmission doesn't respond? If so, it's definitly not the solenoid.

Thanks for your reply Tobey, and to answer your ?, I cannot get the shifter to move at all. I have tried any and all suggestions but none of them I can get to apply to my situation. Any other ideas or remedies....lol
Thanks again.....

Is your button on the shifter moving at all when this happens? Perhaps the button linkage is worn out if it is moving and not depressing the push rod or whatever is in the shift lever down to disengage the shifter from park. What happens if you push the shifter down while pressing the button? Does it shift out easier? Perhaps the locking clip for the shift knob is missing?

These are only suggestions as to what is wrong. I am not sure how to diagnose this without looking at it.

So with the ignition on and brake pressed, are you able to push the button on the shifter in all the way? If not, chances are the shift lock solenoid isn't disengaging for some reason.

The only input I have at the moment is that if you turn the key to the ACC position it should disable the park lock so that at least you can move the shifter to neutral and start the car. Its a pain but it will allow you to move the car:)

Remember to hold down the brakes.

thats the best fix in my opinion...i think we've all had the shifter knob freeze up on us especially in the cold weather, mine does it every morning but the button will eventually press in with both hands on it...kind of wiggling it at the same time. Usually i just do what littlehoov said and turn the ignition on without starting the car, move the shifter to neutral with the brakes on and then start it. The car will not start in anything wither than park or neutral.
