serpentine belt tension .. broke the adjuster.. 1990 4.0 laredodogkatcher 12-27-2008, 04:52 PM 90 cherokee laredo 4.0 ... kinda screwed up, only messed with the belt system once on this jeep before.. about a year ago. intention was to put a new belt on today well, going too fast made me forget to loosen the bolt under steering pump (the bolt that keeps the adjustment swingarm type part from moving) .. so the adjusters threaded receiver broke (not the bolt) as I was trying to loosen the tension I was able to get the belt fairly tight, prying steer pump w/ a screwdriver .. can rotate belt about 90 degrees. my previous belt was about that same tightness. do I have to buy a new steering pump? .. does it come with the adjuster ? or do I need to hit a junkyard up for that part? or just leave it be ? engine seems to be runnin fine as it is. actually sounds better. old belt was rubber .. i bought a Dayco poly cog, alot quieter Saudade 12-27-2008, 05:50 PM JY is always a good source if you have one nearby. Here's a diagram. Is it #13 that's trashed? http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k290/Saudade_ii/Jeep/Manuals/beltadjuster.jpg dogkatcher 12-27-2008, 06:45 PM nice diagram .. thank you !! Im in lakewood (denver) colorado, what is JY? parts place I assume .. website ? yes, #13 ... broke in half where the adjust bolt goes thru it. the "clamp down" bolt still holds with it though. hard to believe i didnt strip the bolt threads 1st .. i thought it was just soiled, why it was being reluctant to turn bolt .. pretty funny ... live & learn ... on that note: look 3 times before doing anything now ... my main question, so I dont throw the belt: i can twist belt approx 100 degrees max .. sound about right on tightness ? its definatly "on" there good though JY is always a good source if you have one nearby.
