Hi lads,
I decided to buil this easy kit during the Christmas break becouse I want to test Rothmans Zero Paints before I put them on Rothmans Tamiya kits :)
Anyway I'm going to use tobacco decal sheet from Museum Collection (Rothmans instead of Racing)

The Revell (reboxed Hasegawa) is a good and cheap choice, although there are some minor problems with little touchoups you can do a great looking model.
Problems:
Too narrow side windows
Wheel cover on the rear need spacers
No tobacco decals
non-steering wheels
Tire decals as ordinary decals so you have to airbrush them with matt acrylic paint (otherwise they will get silver)

But I'm building this along with Hasegawa XJR-8 LM kit and it's proceesing fast, I like it :)

The wheel covers need 4mm spacers

I've added two 4mm spaces + the belt 4mm x 25 mm for the wheel cover so that you can't see trough :)

Then I've painted the trims with Tamiya X18, the masks are done while following this tutorial from Alex Kustov

Mock Up on primered body :) The Windows + lights fit well, so don't worry.

Masking for the Rothmans blue (or Lolmans blue? )
http://madish.kedlubna.com/Pics/Rothmans962C/7.JPG

The result, most of the bleeding blue colour will be covered by a decal :)

Looks good.
You can use a little polish and the overspray may wipe right off.

Looking good indeed.
Nice masking job.

And Chris already gave you a great tip to remove the overspray...

So I've polished oversprayed places and the blue went off :D (however I forgot to take down the blue from the doors, you can see it on Driver's names) Thank you Chris for this tip

Cartograf decals in the kit were superb to work with. Very thin, almost no edges and soft. I've used only water + hairdrayer to achieve this. Nevertheless their dissadvantage is that they got silver once they're dry >> you have to apply a clearcoat and polish :)

Museum Collection (Rothmans markings) weren't so thick, also there was a noticeable edge + the Rothmans logo's edges are YELLOW while Cartograf provide GOLD so that's not that great! :D But thanks to their thickness they create a smooth surface (they don't depend on your smooth paintjob as thin Cartograf do)

On the doors the red stripe doesn't correctly, need to repaint.

Also I recommend to cut the decals with X Acto knife on 2-3 places to make it easier :)

Golden or yellow edges?

Very nice job.
These kits are a bit rough around the edges but always seem to look all right in the end. Plus your just doing a great job on the build!

What are your thoughts on the Zero color now that you've shot it?
Will you use it for the Tamiya kit?

Chris

Hell yeah! These paints are really great to work with. The blue looks accurate, on Tamiya one I will use more layers becouse on this build I've stripped some blue when polishing the wing :grinno:
Also the bottle is that large that for one car is that way too much :D
My goal is to do all these in rothmans colors:
Le Mans 1982
Le Mans 1983
Le Mans 1986 or 87
This Revell one (Monza 1986)
And I've heard that one company is going to make 1985 Brands Hatch winning decals on 962C :)

Anyway after the work with Museum Collection decals I have to be more aware, from the refference photos I can see that the stripes were Golden not Yellow! :D

Ok, something is already done but the pics will be later :D

I've clearcotaed the decals with Tamiya TS13 Clear, after two day cure it was a surprise for me to see white dots on the side of the car:runaround: They are between the Rothmans and Golden stripe on the side + the front fender. However my plan was to do some afeter race weathering so it wont be visible. I'm just curious why such things happen? I've never had problem with TS13... (or 13 brings bad luck!)

Tamiya sprays are so inconsistent!
Sorry to see the troubles your having.

Looks good!

On the spotting, I don't think it is limited to the TS-13 - I had a similar issue with Zero 1K clear on a recent F1 build. In my case, it was over a decal - and it was only in one place on the whole car. This was 1/12 scale, and it was on the engine cover, so a lot of real estate was unaffected, which to me rules out an issue with the paint itself or the environment when I sprayed it. I put it down to not washing the part thoroughly enough before applying the clear - assuming it was Micro Set/Sol residue that fouled it up.

I got an answer from my friend.
It was probably because of applying too much clearcoat (and it could be as I apply heavycoat mainly on the sides becouse there were more decals)

So next time no heavycoats with clearcoats! :D

taliesen

That could explain mine as well . . . . . I'll have to be more careful on the next one!

Well, so I've done the inside of the body. However when taking down the masking tape I accidentaly took some decals. Only minor damage. The sides on Rothmans logo went off becouse I cut them (as I wanted to do black panel lines) and the masking tape stick to the edge of the decal. Dunlop logo went off becouse the clearcoat layer there was too thick. I have it on all my cars because I forgot to paint these corners :D

But it will looked like damaged during the race :)

http://madish.kedlubna.com/Pics/Rothmans962C/23.JPG

Also painted the side window as in real. Need to polish to have nice line though.
http://madish.kedlubna.com/Pics/Rothmans962C/24.JPG

How to spend less on coloring the body :D
http://madish.kedlubna.com/Pics/Rothmans962C/25.JPG

And the wip cockpit. The wire is 0,2mm and the ending is just rolled bare metal foil :) I will add seatbelts and do the rest tomorrow. (You can se the unweathered front wheel too)

Very nice progress. Maybe you could use a little white and a brush to 'fill' in some of the damaged areas of decal....?? Just a thought as they are not too bad anyway and do look like they were chipped off during the race.
Nice progress anyway I really like the way the build is progressing.

So I've sanded the decals and polished the body. On those thin Cartograf decals I got some dust below them and after the sanding it makes those little holes :D (number marking on the side)
I reworked the Rothmans logo with white colour but after the sanindg I noticed that I damaged the letter "m" in Rothmans. omg :D

shame what happened with the spray, but now this is the perfect time to weather a kit, you can never be wrong when weathering a race car
