i have a 89 firebird with a 700r4 trans i just got of work and it started but wouldn't shift it was stuck in park. it looked like the button didnt go all the way in when i tried to shift. this is the first time that this has happended. what could it be. should i have put the break to the floor more, or is it the linkage. i couldnt really mess with it at the moment cus if i didnt get a ride right then and there i would of had to walk. help me please i need my bird for a little while longer.

remove the trim panel around the shifter shaft and also the shifter knob. you will be able to see the mechanics of the shifter under the panel. shouldn't be difficult to figure out from there. you will even be able to push the little tab down with you hand that the shifter button is supposed to push that unlocks the mechanism allowing you to move the shifter out of park.
