1999 monte carlo voltage readingstuckunderhood 12-15-2008, 04:59 AM I tested my 1999 monte carlos battery yesterday. It has not started for one month. Had failures in the past, but it acts like a vats problem. Battery tested 4-6 volts in car. Pulled battery and put on bench and it tested 12.35. Have it on trickle charger now. Wondering why it was so low in car. Car has aftermarket amp in trunk installed by "pros". Do I need to pull amp and remove? Am cleaning leads to starter. Both s and main leads to starter tested good with test light. Battery seems to have low voltage while installed. Contacts were clean on battery. Will take battery to autozone and have it tested to make sure. Car was hit 1 1/2 year ago on that side up front by wheel. To many options??? Thanks j cAT 12-15-2008, 10:10 AM I tested my 1999 monte carlos battery yesterday. It has not started for one month. Had failures in the past, but it acts like a vats problem. Car was hit 1 1/2 year ago on that side up front by wheel. To many options??? Thanks the battery will get drained somewhat over 11/2 months...because the vehicle was hit the battery was most likely damaged internaly.. always disconnect neg battery leads when storing more than a week... load testing will show battery condition....If you can check the leakage current with the vehicle off it should be a few milliamps only...if above 80ma then try to find whats causing the drain...this could be a bad alternator as well draining the battery....with audio amps this is usually the case, alternator failures... stuckunderhood 12-15-2008, 06:22 PM Roger will do the checks and let the forum know. stuckunderhood 12-17-2008, 03:09 PM Sure enough the battery is dead. Installing new battery. How to check alternator. If car starts the voltage should jump about 1.5 volts???? stuckunderhood 12-19-2008, 10:22 PM starter was sparking while turning off nuts to clean contacts on starter the unit turned tried starting and the sparks were flyin now new starter j cAT 12-21-2008, 12:04 PM starter was sparking while turning off nuts to clean contacts on starter the unit turned tried starting and the sparks were flyin now new starter before cleaning or securing the starter motor connections you must disconnect the battery neg connection... clean the teminals then reinstall the wire fasteners...make sure the lugs are snug... after starting the voltage in cold weather should go to 14volts ... vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
