Williams Honda FW10 - Studio27 1/20

Needed a new challenge... :)

I have put on my workbench an old S27 kit of Williams FW10. Kit is rather a dog so I decided to donor some of the parts from Tamiya FW11 kit.

The plan is: modify front and rear suspension, donor: wheels, gearbox and suspension parts from Tamiya (btw it seems that S27 just copied Tamiya parts), MFH seat belts and some bits and pieces to make it more alive.

If anyone can help me with the pictures of the real car I would be very gratefull. Especially I am lacking of rear/engine/gearbox pics. No pics of interior as well...

So far, so good. Some basic puttying/cleaning started.

Looking forward to this one too. I'm sure you'll make a great job of it, but you're right, it does look like a real dog of kit! Is that typical S27 quality, or have things improved since?

It seems that they improved quality - that's what I presume looking at my other kits.

Here comes a small update. Not very spectacular. I have cut off diffuser and glued a new one from Tamiya kit. The old one was bended and not nicely molded. I have puttied and primed underbody. It still requires some corrections. 3-4 hours of work and body has been 75% cleaned up - I have cleaned air intakes (mould shifted), cockpit and drilled a hole for new gearbox.

My plans about donor parts have changed. I wanted to use whole rear suspension of FW11 but I read that FW10 used push rod what has changed to pull rod in FW10B (the same as FW11). So, I faced two options:

a) build FW10B - which means to created new rear of body and I don't have even a one picture of it.

b) build FW10 and use Studio27 upper arms as designed. Not very elegant...

Well I've choosen B option as I would like to finish this buiild in a reasonable time frame.

Here you can see another problem - air ducts for rear brakes. They look badly aligned as I think they should be parallel to the wheel. I don't have a good picture to compare. For now, I am pretty calm :)

Nice work.
I'm interested to see how the suspension turns out for you.

This thread is not dead baby, it is not dead :)
After a long, long while I've gone back to this build. Some progress has been made and I am determined to finish this model by the end of this year. So more updates to follow

What has been done...
Body has been primed with Gunze Resin Primer than mist layered with Base White. Now is sitting in my dry booth with Finisher's Base White sprayed on. BTW I am not entirely happy with the result as the Finisher's paint gave some texture unlike the lastly used Tamiya/Gunze. Hope it will flatten out while drying...

Wheels painted and weathered. The first time I painted logos and I am pretty happy with the outcome. It looks much better than decals.
Now working on rear suspension (big, big pita).
Front and rear wing painted, pics will come asap.

Masking

After painting. There are two places where masking tape has pilled off. Not a problem as it goes under the decal

Masking - 3M tape + Tamiya 40mm. Painted Tamiya Lemon Yellow thinned with Gunze Leveling Thinner

Decal nightmare begins...

Decals are pretty old but no yellowing noticed. Opaqueness and transparency (as far) are very good.
They do not respond very well to Gunze softening solution - I used hair dryer and tones of Mr. Softer. After half an hour they started to respond. Heart stopping procedure :)
Now it’s drying time and I hope that it will look at least well.

Well, I am sorry - it will be number 5...

Decals on nose came up pretty bad... I hope I will correct some cracks and deformations with clearcoat and sanding. It is strange - some decals responded well and layed nicely, others gave me headache.

Nice. This is coming along well. Good luck with the rest of the decals. Have you tried MicroSol instead of the Gunze Softer? I used Gunze too in the beginning and some decals didn't react to it. Then i used MicroSol and that works a lot better for me.

No I have not but I have to look at other media than Gunze. I have never had problems with S27 decals but it always has to be the first time :)

Thanks for the kind words. I hope that it will turn out into decent model

Well, now I am calm and relaxed. My pulse is not high and nothing has been destroyed around me...:banghead:

I put blue stripe decal in water and than it has fallen into pieces. Itself. I was so cautious and did not bend the decal sheet even once.
Great. Now I have to paint this stripe and little (0.2 mm) red stripe along with the blue one.

I consider this as a challenge not a disaster JJ

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/Macio4ever/FW10/24.jpg

The rest of the decals are on body. I will put one layer of clearcoat to protect decals and start tedious masking and painting procedure. I am curious what's gonna be

Now I have to paint this stripe and little (0.2 mm) red stripe along with the blue one.

Did you consider taking the stripes from an FW-11 decal sheet? Or take a solid blue decal (maybe a spare from FW-11) and cut the stripes from this decal with a fresh #11 blade. I did this several times to repair decal jobs.... Anyway, good luck!

Not a chance. FW 11 decals are different in shape and colour. I was thiniking about it but I have chosen paintnig instead of patchworking :)

Body sitting in Dry Booth after clearcoat. Meanwhile I did some corrections to brake ducts. I have combined FW part and S27 bonding them toogether. It is not ideal but will be better than S27 original part.

Short update
Brake air intakes painted. Rear wing is glued (pain) and decaled (less pain). Decals are still wet. All just dry fitted

Short update.
Rear wing fully decaled, I have cut decals to lay them down easier on complicated shape. It is much less stressful and goes well.

Front wing decaled as well and painted with semi-gloss clear. Body cleared again as decals were not protected enough to mask them (3M blue tape has stripped one).

Some impressive masking going on here.

Color matching is indeed not perfect as you mentioned, but might not be so obvious when there's some clear over it...

Well, thanks - kind you are.

If I have spare decals I would strip first and than finish body again. Now it is time to close this sad story asap :)

I have sanded body and put last decals. Now I am considering to use 2K clear as final coat. What do you think? Is it good idea or troublesome?

2K is the way to go, kind to decals, just build it up slowly.

Looks like I am a bit too late, but did you check the F1 Modeling vol. 5, there are a few good detail pics of this car...

Crossing fingers for you, I know that those very old Studio27 kits are worse than a nightmare! So far, so good!

Couldn't find this issue of F1 Modeling. I have best selection but only one or two pictures are included.
Building this kit without Tamiya FW11 that would be massive PITA
