Hello,

I have a 1998 1.8L beetle. It will not start , not even crank. Put new Battery in and cleaned cables. Tried to start in Neurtral and Park, neither work. I wanted to check the transmission sensor or gear position selector. Is there a way I can check them myself?

Thanks,
Dan

Could be a alarm system, key malfunction. Hard to tell on this one. A trip to the dealership may be your best solution. Remember if you tow, check your automobile insurance for a credit, if you have that coverage. Could save you at least $80.

I understand not using the dealer. I had a no start problem with my 2000 that i could not find. I sent it to the dealer and it turned out to be a fuel pump relay switch. Go figure! $210. Check out fee plus part. Not bad.

Thanks vwarron,
I am a diy kinda person, but know when I'm beat. I have such terrible luck at the dealer here in alaska and only one choice and 50 miles away, So I thought I would give it some time and try to start simple, but I should know better I have had no simple problems, complex with the Dealer charging me more time than answers, And it was my choice to get into the vdub thing, so here we go again, will post what it was if they figure it out, Thanks again for the advice.

If you have a wiring diagram you can find the wires from the trans that act as an inhibitor and short them. No witchcraft involved!
With respect to VWARRON (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=596874), VW's are not necessarily full of dealer serviceable items only. They are conventional in design...probably primitive in many ways especially engine design. With the aid of a workshop manual - Haynes or better, and a bit of determination and grit you can fix just about anything. There is always more than one way to skin a cat.

Thanks hako and vwarron,

I brought to my reg mech first just to see, closer too. Was the key, he reprogramed it, (even though when I called the dealer and said they were the only ones who could do it) . Still bad part is it starts right up idles fine, bring it up to 40mph rpms 2000+ then tries to die, can feather the gas pedal to keep it running, than if you sit a few minutes it will go and repeat the trying to die thing. My mech said he cleared a bunch of codes don't know if that did it, Or I am so lucky that I just have another whole problem..... hahaha...Its been my luck lately. Thinking about parking it so I don't go out and baseball bat the thing, no not really but just frustrated a little bit....
