Jean Todt's Ferrari FXX. Using SMS superset

The illusive FXX that no one knows if it exists! Even Ferrari will not acknowledge its existence. Many say it became Schumacher's Metallic Black FXX but there is no concrete evidence. One thing that is evident.....

http://images47.fotki.com/v1401/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010032-vi.jpg

SCALE MOTORSPORT FXX SUPER KIT...... its awesome.... the decals are unlike any I have ever seen or used...................

http://images48.fotki.com/v1406/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010039-vi.jpg

The Superkit states to paint the pieces black and the decal does the rest.......

http://images47.fotki.com/v1403/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010041-vi.jpg

As you can see they are overlays that provide an incredibly realistic weave! In fact if you were going for the flat carbon look they are perfect!! They are very thin.... and the instructions say to only use DECAL SET, Not SOLVENT... and they are right. Apply them, coat them with set and walk away and they do their magic.....

And the real magic happens after 2K clear... :) :)

I wanted blinding gloss!!! Look at these body pieces.... the weave is simply breathtaking...... thats dupont 2k clear freshly applied.... it needs time to shrink back and only minor polishing.....

You are one very brave soul to undertake that project. I can't imagine how many decals I'd ruin before finally giving up altogether. It looks fantastic. Can't wait for the rest of the project. Good luck!

Just a perfect build.
How long do let the 2K dry before you buff it out?

I always wondered why nobody posted a review of the kit but now seeing this is just way better, but maybe you could post some pics of the turned parts?

Someone has to show this thread to Matthew, I am sure he is interested in this...

I kinda resisted buying the set since it is quite expensive but now I have a problem... the december will be an expensive month MFH F2008 and the FXX detail set oh boy...:licka:

Mind boggling omission, should be a soup to nuts package for the price.

Direct quote from Matthew:

the reason why I didn’t include CF for the chassis components is because we had to stop adding stuff someplace if we didn’t the price of the kit would have been too high for anyone to buy. This way at least all the ‘in your face’ stuff is covered and if anyone wants to add more CF they simply buy extra sheets. This way the builder has the choice as to how much detail and how much it will cost in stead of me kind of forcing them to buy everything.

here are more pics of the goodies in this superkit from SMS............

Look at all the goodies!! And photoetch!!!!

http://images47.fotki.com/v1399/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010048-vi.jpg

Oh and I did what polishing was needed with 2000 grit and perfect it III rubbing compound from 3M.... Now I need to decide on the stripes or not.......I mean what is totally cool about these decals is how there is a bonding stripe down the middle of the whole car. That makes the weave all the more convincing and the stripe will hide that.... I need votes!! ;D Stripe or no stripe?

Pardon anyone who may have seen my C6R BBS wheel thread on GPMA, but I just can't help but add the following commentary.

I think someone would do well to offer just carbon fiber body templates without all the trinkets. There are a lot of builders out there that just want the body decals w/o all the other stuff.

The CF truly is awesome!

Did I uderstand correctly that this is a new type/pattern of CF? A sort of "Hi-Def ver. 2.1"?

That carbon looks so deep. It's mesmerizing.

I'd like to add my vote for no stripes. It's overdone imo.

As ever Dave, your craftsmanship is truly outstanding. I think you should leave the stripe off. That glossy, realistic carbon finish will look superb once the model is complete.:smokin:

Will this new type of carbon be available in sheet form?? It really appears to be a step forward in realism.

I say add the stripes.

The line is an optical courtesy of the pattern. Not something I feel is "real" nor would you ever see it on a real car.

Add the stripe! You will have an exact replica of the real thing!

I say buy another one & add the stripe to that!!!! Why not, its only money it does grow on trees, I agree I would love to have the CF offered as a seperate kit to purchase, my skill level is not ready to work with that many photoetched parts & turned Ali parts, i would also like to see this CF pattern offered in full sheet size
Cant wait to see more

jano11
12-03-2008, 04:43 AM
 Why? That stripe adds nothing to this car, it's just a stripe that you find nowadays on any wannabee race car, while this car IS a race car with no need for stripes to prove that.
It was looking impressive before that stripe arrived, IMO.

Well, it's your model, but I still am saddened by this choice.:(

Drama much over someone else's model? :eek7:

They are authentic FXX stripes...nothing random at all about them. To me an FXX sans stripes looks a bit too much like a common Enzo.

And why does it bother you so much? Was it about your model?

Well, to me the essential difference between an Enzo and an FXX isn't the stripe.

Well, to me the essential difference between an Enzo and an FXX isn't the stripe.

I wasn't trying to be disrespectful and tried to put a humorous spin on your serious tone. Put yourself in the builder's shoes for a minute. He clearly is happy with the stripe while you dramatically questioned his decision for your own personal reasons. I try not to negatively comment about someone else's model that doesn't fit my personal ideal of that particular car. If I see a model that disappoints me like that, I keep quiet. Particularly if the builder is happy with the results and doesn't ask for more input on the solution.

A comment like "Sorry, I preferred it without the stripes" would have been more than sufficient without giving the impression that you think he's done something terribly wrong, unless that was your ultimate intention.

Awesome model.

I solved the "hiding it in whatever forum" long ago. I was miffed at the expansion of sub-forums here, and Jay made me a nifty shortcut that searches all the new posts in the various forums so that I see everything new when I visit A/F.

I've saved the following page as my A/F bookmark. I open the page, hit the link, and everything new in all the model forums shows up.

This Page is my Personal A/F Home Page (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=4107268&postcount=87)

Beautiful work and great finish as always!
I think the stripe is right ( i don't fancy the FXX too much though)! I may be proven wrong but i doubt there should be a seam in the CF ( or whatever you might call that ) on that bonnet. I'd rather expect it to bee one big sheet without a separation in that area. Is there any reference around to verify that?

Ok, here is my post on this...first I think this is awesome stuff..it all looks great to me and i'll buy this kit when I have the money, I have one question though....does anyone other than me think the decals lack depth in the pattern? I'm not questioning in anyway or trying to detract from this beautiful build, but the cf look is lost on me...maybe its the lighting, the angle..in some spots it looks good but overall it looks like the the old non weave pattern....to me after using the non hi-def weave and having excellent results, this doesn't have the same effect. I'm really not trying to start a flame war, nor am I flaming the kit or build, I just would like to see some different pics of the weave. Sorry if this sounds picky...I just like to see pretty carbon fiber...lol

Other than that this is cool!!! SMS did a great job, and your work on this is excellent thus far...please keep us updated frequently on the build!!!

i think the "problem" is that the weave effect isn't to scale and that to scale weave is virtually invisible.

It wasn't a negative comment, it was my opinion. And just because I explained why I felt so it doesn't mean that there is a need to ridicule my opinion.

Beautiful start, the decal job on the body parts looks flawless, can't see where any of the seems are except a little bit on the hood. In that case it still looks like the carbon is sopposed to look like that on the 1:1. The strip also makes it look less naked, great decision.
I myself wanted this kit as soon as i saw its release. It seems like there are a little more aluminum parts compared to the regular sms ferrari kit.
One thing i have to mention is mattew stated that they can buy the extra cf decals for the chasis, but i can't seem to find them on the site. Are they still in production? Or are they the carbon plain weave code 1400?
So in any case im really tuned in as this build will result in a beautiful build. Definetly keep us posted and good luck!!!!!

I wasn't intending to ridicule you...I was trying to lighten the tone of your seriously unhappy over-reaction. I still can't understand how anyone can look at work like this and make the results sound so disappointing that they sadden you...well...:uhoh: Had the banter been going back and forth in person it wouldn't have been something that would have gone anywhere near this far.

Glad you're enjoying the work and following it to the end. Work like this is inspiring and sometimes provocative. I'm too lazy and somewhat intimidated by the scope of the work involved to undertake a full c/f job on a model like this, and it's fun to see someone bring it alive.
