I am one of those people who doesn't have good credit. I went to a Used car dealership that finances to build credit. I went to look at a 97 Dodge Dakota 4x4 extended cab, I went to test drive it and it wouldnt stay running. It would crank over, and start but would quit. The salesman says its just the battery, but Im no schmoe! That has nothing to do with the battery, just that the longer I cranked it seemed to wear the battery down. There were times when I had to do a quick pump on the accelerator to get it to start. The salesman said he would send it to the shop and have it checked and fixed, but I wanna know before hand what else it could be. Could one of you MORE mechanically incliened than I, help me? This is the Truck I want at the price I can afford, without having to go through the credit hassle and not having to have a CO-SIGNER.

DO NOT BUY THAT TRUCK!!!!

If the thing doesn't run correctly right off the lot, odds are you are going to have to drop some $$$ into fixing it yourself, even if the dealer "claims" they fixed it. And you are probably right that it is not the battery.....BUT......a bad battery can cause that problem. What concerns me is that the battery held enough charge to start the thing, so it surely holds enough charge to keep the engine running.

That being said.....I have been in your boat as far as credit goes. Yes, those dealers where "everyone is approved" for financing ARE one positive way to begin to re-build your credit. But be forewarned.........I ended up having a 17.5% interest rate on my financing. If you are going to be paying that much above what the purchase price is, do you really want to take the chance of having to spend hundreds of dollars fixing it right away???

I don't know if this helps, but I was in the exact same situation a few months ago. I went and bought a 2000 Chevy Cavalier at one of those places. Why??? Because I was able to get into a nice car, with warranty, with piss-poor credit. But I was not about to go blow money on something that had any potential of giving me fits. I figured it was worth the extra financing to save myself some headache later. Just something to think about.

Funny, my ideal vehicle was also a Dakota. Actually, I just went out and bought an '03 Quad-Cab 4x4.

BUT DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND AVOID THAT TRUCK. SOUNDS WAY TO FISHY.....there are others out there.

by the way, I have a 2000 cavalier for sale if you are interested ;)

When I went back the next day, they said it was the battery....so I test drove it anyway. The first thing I did was take it to a mechanic to get it checked out. They couldnt see any flaws from the computer. They even test drove it. I ended up buying it, because I didnt know how much longer my van would've lasted....they gave me a better trade-in deal than any other car lot offered. And I didnt wanna settle for something that I didn't really want. I didnt want a car or a van, a FORD OR A CHEVY. This is one I really wanted.....and it has a 2 year or 21,000 mile warranty on the majority of the engine, and the tranny. I did a lot of thinking about it before I signed the papers, and IT WAS A GOOD DEAL!

Thanks for the advice anyway!
