Drive Axle Seal installation

I have removed the axle seal on my 97 SL2. The new seal from Autozone has the seal cover already installed. When the seal cover is installed can it cause the seal to be difficult to install? I have not had any luck getting the new seal installed and was wondering if I should attempt to remove the seal cover? If removing the seal cover is the correct method any suggestion on how to do it without damaging the seal.

RC1488 Thanks for the reply. I managed to get the seal in by using a cup type of oil filter wrench. It was exactly the diameter I needed. Now I could hold the seal straight and using a 3/8 in extension a good sharp rap with a hammer the seal was started in. Working a brass drift around the edge finished the job off.
