i have a 98 jimmy , auto trans , 110k .
sometimes when i use 4hi it goes into it fine but has trouble going back into 2hi . when i press the button the light flashes and i can hear the motor working but it just goes back to 4hi .
today when it did it i stomped on the gas from a stop and hit the 2hi button at the same time and it immediately worked .
any input on this is appreciated .

What transfer case?
Have you checked for codes?
Are you tires a matched set.
Try stopping and placing trans in neutral or backing up and rolling forward a little.
Does that help?

How did you check for codes?
There is two different stock transfer cases?
What is the tag no on back of it?
How many shift buttons and does any say auto on it?

my buddy works at a BP autocare center and they have a scanner that can pull transfer case codes and there were none .

ill take a look at the case tomorrow when i have day light and let ya know .

there are 3 buttons . 2hi , 4hi , 4lo

On that one a scanner will not read transfer case codes.
To get codes ground pin 13 on your diagnostic connector and then turn on key and count shift button blinks.
Post back the blinks.

Does all lights come on/blink one time when grounded and key is turned on?

On regular key on do lights come on for a bulb check?
And then all go out and one come on to indicate what gear it is in?

This link may help.
