Hello all,

After reading the posts in this forum, I have finally become an AF member. This is my first post, so I'll try to do my best.

I bought this kit in December 2007, but I didn't start it until last June. I have added some detail parts (the Marlboro decals, a Good Year template for the tires from Acu Stion, some parts from Sakatsu and different types of CF from Scale Motorsport, and PE nuts and bolds from Scale Motorsport).

I have finished the engine and currently I'm working with the cockpit.

This is the kit, out of the box:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/010.jpg

The Marlboro decals (for McLaren MP4/2C, MP4/4 and MP4/6):
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/012.jpg

And the Good Year template for the tires:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/018.jpg

This is the engine at the beginning:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/040.jpg

I added some extra wires and electric connectors, as well as some extra tubing:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/064.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/139.jpg

Here's the engine, nearly finished:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/091.jpg

After mounting the rear suspension, with CF parts in the cooling of the brakes:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/114.jpg

And finally the completed engine:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/131.jpg

So that's all for now. I hope you like it (I do). I will upload the photos of the cockpit soon.

Chris Hi Chris,

I have used normal Tamiya paints (I have used both airbrush and brushes). For the engine block and the suspension arms I have used a special paint for metal (in spray). The final look is the same as real metal. If you are interested in these paint, here's the link:

Here's some more progress.

The control panel in the left-side of the cockpit, which looks pretty good. To do the labels, I used adhesive paper, printed with the printer in the best resolution, to create a more realistic look:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/143.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/144.jpg

Here, you can see it again:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/159.jpg

Here's some detail of the right-side of the cockpit. You can see the brake balance knob (I used the same technique as above) and the gear shift (I added some PE parts, to give it a more realistic look):
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/157.jpg

That's all for now.

In the next post I will show you a modification I did to the kit. It is not still 100% finished, but it looks much better than the original kit.

Hello again,

As I told you in my last post, I'll show you the modification I did to the kit. In the normal kit, the nose and the cockpit are the same piece, as you can see here:
http://hpbimg.hobbygrandprix.com/manuals/McLaren%20MP4%206%20Honda%2026%20p18.jpg

So after seeing some photos of the real car, I decided that the kit should be like this:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/161.jpg

As you can see, I cut the nose of the car and I used the metal piece where the inferior suspension arms are screwed (that goes screwed to the nose of the car) as a holder for the nose.
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/165.jpg

I added a plastic piece in the bottom of the nose, to hold it to the metal piece, and I did two holes in the top of the cockpit, to get the nose fixed:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/168.jpg

So here you can see the look of the cockpit without the nose, like the real car is:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/172.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/175.jpg

With this modification, all the work in the front part of the car, like the brake fluid bottles can be easily seen.

More uploads will come soon. Thanks for looking.

Hi guys. Thanks for your comments. Here you have more photos.

I added the connector where the steering wheel is plugged. You nearly can not see it in the model, but as the real car has it...
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/197.jpg

And here's the steering wheel. I added the wires for the four buttons, and the wire that plugs it to the connector:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/216.jpg

Here you have the LCD panel:

And everything is ready!

Hello again. More updates are coming.

Here's the panel at the back of the cockpit. I changed a little bit the colors, to adapt it to the real car. Tamiya recommends to mix X-26:10 and X-11:1, but I also added clear red (X-27) and flat brown (XF-10).
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/176.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/178.jpg

Here is the front suspension. I put putty in some holes (it was still not painted in the photo), and I added some connectors.
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/191.jpg

And some detail of the modification I did in the nose. I added some tubing, some wires, some PE parts and some connectors.

Hi again. I have uploaded more photos. Let's start with the cockpit:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/188.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/210.jpg

Here are the front breaks:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/206.jpg

And some detail of the ECU. I added the belt that holds it and some PE parts:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/201.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/202.jpg

I have just finished the sidepods, and now I'm working with the exhausts and the radiators. I'll upload more photos soon.

Hi again!

Here you have the latest photos that I have updated. Let's start with some detail of the seat:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/196.jpg

And now, the left sidepod. As you can see, in all the electronic boxes, I changed the original Tamiya tubing for another one that looks much better. I still have to add some CF decals to the nose, but I'll do it together with some other CF decals.
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/236.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/233.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/263.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/235.jpg

I want to add belts to the electronic boxes, in the same way I did with the ECU, because I removed the plastic belt from the original piece. As you can see in the ECU, they look better than the plastic one.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/234.jpg

So that's all for now. More to come soon.

Yes indeed, a great looking build.

Always great to see a new update so we can see what you've up to.
I really like what you're doing. I do have this kit in my to-do pile, but I doubt I'll have the patience (or the skills) to get so much detail into it.

But that doesn't stop me from enjoying this build !

More photos are coming!

And before we go to the right sidepod, I'll show you a detail of the steering column and the front suspension, that wasn't posted so far.
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/232.jpg

And now the right sidepod:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/261.jpg

I have added this electronic box. In some reference pictures it appears, but in some not. But I think that the model looks better with it than without it.
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/257.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/260.jpg

I have created this part. I did it with the thick Tamiya tube, then i put a thin tube inside, and then a wire inside. It is very easy to do, and I think that the result is quite similar to the orignial part. Here you have my part:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/243.jpg

And here is the original:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/264.jpg

And here you have the last part I modified. I added some PE parts, a clear tube and two connectors.
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/242.jpg

Here you have the radiators (before adding some details)
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/247.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/248.jpg

And the exhausts. I added some darker shadows, to give them a more realistic look.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/253.jpg

I added some styrene details (please, check the original photos and you'll know what I mean...). I also added some solder lines.

And here are the (nearly) finished exhausts:

Fantastic work.

Out of curiosity; how many hours per day/week would you estimate you devote to building this kit?

Unfortunately, I can not work on this kit as much as I would like to, but, just for an estimation, maybe one or two hours every two or three days... and at the weekend a little bit more!

Hello guys. Here you have more progress photos. Today I'll focus on the radiator photos, once fitted in the cockpit:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/288.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/289.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/291.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/294.jpg

The black line I added between the radiator and the sidepod is black-painted masking tape. It's easy to do, and it looks good enough. It is the same technique that I used to create the brackets on the radiators and for the Engine Control Unit.

I have also added more details to the radiators:

I hope you like it. More to come soon.

Hi guys, here you have more progress. I have added more details to the cockpit. The first one is the bracket of the electronic box I added to the right sidepod:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/307.jpg

I have also added a belt to a box of the left sidepod:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/308.jpg

And finally I added some connectors at the back of the cockpit. I also created two plastic plates (one for each side) that I still have to cover with metal foil.

Hi guys. I have just added the exhausts to the engine.

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/322.jpg

Now, the next step is to make a single piece from the engine and the cockpit (and adding a lot of wires...).

I'll keep you informed.

Looking good. A few of your details are looking familiar...are you using my website for reference as well?

Hi Bil,

I must say yes!! Your build of the McLaren MP4/6 is and has been an inspiration for a lot of people. I have used some of your details as a reference, but I have created my own details as well (for example, the removable nose).

Anyway, thank you for your help.

Yes, that's completely right. I have learnt some of the techniques that I'm using now to build my models watching the posts of this forum, so I think that I also have to cooperate posting my photos.

Your work with the McLaren MP4/6 is excellent, and I think that the Ferrari 641/2 is at the same level (but maybe not so popular...).

And Oriol Servia's racing suit is great!!! (he is from Catalonia, like me).

Hi guys. Some days have passed since the last update, so I think it's time to post more photos.

Finally, I have joined the engine and the chassis. I have spent a lot of time adding wires and some other details. Here you have some photos of this work:

Hi guys. I have more progress photos to share with you. I have slightly modified the look of some of the screws. First of all, I added some putty, then I painted them and finally I added a PE screw. The result, as you can see, looks better than the original screw.

Hi guys. First of all, Happy New Year to everyone. And now, let's go with some more progress photos.

First of all, the undertray:

looks like it's coming together nicely..... has there been any overly challenging issues with it so far?

Thank you for your comments.

I have just tried to reproduce as much as possible the real car (the wiring scheme, all the carbon fiber pieces, lots PE parts (nuts, bolts, ...) and all the details I have been able to create).

Hi guys! And now, it's time to go with the tires. Here you can see what I did first: I masked the whole tire and removing the template once the paint was dry, but I didn't like the final look because some pieces of paint were fixed to the template. So I decided to paint them and remove the template immediately.
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/388.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/389.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/390.jpg

As you can see, I added some more details, such as the labels, the air valves or the reference letters at the side:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/394.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/396.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/400.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/401.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/402.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/403.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/405.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/406.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/408.jpg

As I had not many references for the labels of the tires, I just let my imagination run, and here is the result (I think it is not so bad), for the front tires label:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/FRONT.jpg

And the rear tires:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/REAR.jpg

I think that they can be helpful for anyone who wants to create tire labels.

That's all for now. More to come soon.

Hi again guys. I couldn't finish the chassis without adding some final details. Here you have the last ones in the engine:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/409.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/410.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/411.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/412.jpg

And also the wire of this small antenna:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/414.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/415.jpg

And the Brembo decals in the brakes, just before assembling the tires:
http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/416.jpg

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/rr281/kimi4623/McLaren%20MP46/417.jpg

We're getting close to the end, only the front and rear wings and the bodywork...

More to come soon!
