1997 dodge van 2500 3 q ton extended 318 v8.....

its been running choppy latly and today it just stopped. the motor turns and turns... im guessing its a fuel issue. im told by my mechanic that the fuel pump is under the tank or he has to drop the tank to fix her....

any thoughts on this?

We would need to know what the fuel pressure is at the fuel rail to be able to confirm a bad fuel pump for you.

Yes the fuel pump is inside the tank and the tank has to come down to change it.

HELLO!

I have a 1996 dodge ram van 5.9L. Actually I have 3 of these vans with the 5.9L engine.

I have no idea how but one of the vans would not go uphill without running out of gas. I would run out of gas at about 1/4 to 1/2 tank full of gas. Finally, I decided to drop the tank and see why. When I pulled out the fuel pump assembly with regulator and fuel level sensors. *1 huge unit* I found that the plastic piece holding the fuel pump down into position against the fuel filter had broke. That means the fuel pump was not being pushed againt the fuel filter on the bottom. I was able to weld up the plastic holder with my solder iron and now it works again.

I would guess that your fuel filter could be clogged. Dropping the tank is not easy. I would never drop the tank unless it was empty. It will be impossible to reinstall unless you empty the tank.

I have fuel pump kits for these vans. Basically the pump and filters

I would definitely check the spark plugs, air filter, and cap and rotor FIRST before I started dropping the tank.

Yes the fuel filter could be the culprit!
