Look at the little universal joint just below the master cylinder. If you take the shaft all the way out and lubricate the u joint, it will free it up. You may be able to loosen the bottom of the shaft at the steering box and work the shaft to free the joint after lubrication also. Just be careful not to allow the steering wheel to turn too much. If it spins freely, you will ruin the clockspring.

Remove it and soak it in transmission fluid or anything that will loosen the rust. Work it in all directions until it frees up. Then be sure you include that in your regular maintenance. Spray the joints with good lubricant.

Way2old I want to thank you your info it was right on. I found a steering shalft in a junk yard for $50 (Better than $300 for a new one) when I took the old one off the joint in front of the fire wall was about to fall apart. After some prying I was able to get it changed out. Your help saved me alot of time and engery. Hope you and yours have a Marry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thanks again.
