After years of procrastination I've been convinced to start building this kit. Thanks Dwayne :eek7:
Here's a very quick summary of my intentions for this build. I've got the Scale Motorsport detail set so of course I'll be adding that to it, but also the usual scratchbuilt details and my own turned and milled metal pieces.
The idea is to replicate the car as if it has been raced therefore I'll use quite a bit of weathering as well. I also want to accurately replicate all the various surfaces of the car such as the fibreglass, cast metal, machined metal, weld seams and putty seams to name a few. I'll share some of my techniques with you as questions arise but I must thank Eric 'mach1_2003' for his great fibreglass technique which I have employed on a few of the parts. here's a link to his 'how to' thread for those who are interested.
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=438245&highlight=Fiberglass
Of course I've used a technique of my own for all the other parts which you can see later on.
Anyway, I'm not a fan of words so here are some pictures of the progress so far.
First the wheels and tyres

LOL glad i got you started on that kit was getting sick of seeing it laying on the floor lol. Hey what are friends for to mess with ya head on a build like this im impressed again with the qaulity of the build (again) and if you notice parts missing like well wheels motor etc it may just have fell into my car instead. i have alot of feedback from the guy's at our last model night and they were blown away with it.

I´m watching, you can bet on that. I´m always playing with the idea of making this one or the 934.
This looks very promising so far and I´m very curious what else you have up your sleeves.
The texture you applied on the tank is already very realistic. Same with the detailing on the engine. All these small and bity parts - cool!
Let´s see how we can keep you motivated. We should put this one on follow-up and PM the hell out of you!
Cheers

This is going to be mind-boggling or modeling porn as some would call it :grinyes:!!!
Tyres look superb, engine texture looks awesome (micro ballons or what was that stuff called?) and the tank looks just like the real one... sensational!

I've been waiting on you to do this for quite a while now and it's looking awesome! I'm really looking forward to watching this build come to life.
As for ref pictures... I happened to get a lot of pictures of the sister car (Car #4) at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Daytona, Florida earlier this year. When I return from my business trip next week I'll see what I have and send them to you.

Thanks for the compliment Matthew! I hope I can do the kit proud for you!
As for the tank. I simply brush Lacquer thinners onto the bare plastic then mottle it into the surface with an old and stiff bristled brush. As the thinners dries out the plastic gets stringy and takes on the look you see. From there a series of washes highlights the surface.
looks stunning! What did you do to the tyres to get the worn look?
First sand the mold lines out of the tyres but collect the rubber that comes off. Then spray the surface of the tyre with hair spray and roll the wet tyre through the rubber. After that dries I spray acrylic (that's important otherwise the paint won't dry) matt black followed by various browns until I get the colour effect wanted.

Yep. Micro Balloons. It's important when using this product to really clean your airbrush out afterwards.

Just a quick update. I'm switching back and forwards between the various subassemblies so this thread will be all over the place with progress updates :sly:
I cut the steering wheel apart for ease of painting. I wanted to replicate the stitched leather cover so after cleaning up the parts I made little 45 degree grooves on the inside of the wheel. I then made them at a 90 degree angle the other way. I used the mission models tool.

You'll hardly notice it when the kits complete but that's half the fun of doing these extra little bits.
More soon.

Daniel,
I just use a plain square pattern fabric like Eric suggested in his 'how-to' thread. Here's the link again.
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=438245&highlight=Fiberglass
The rough finish on the other parts is from the lacquer/ stiff bristled brush effect described earlier.
I've also made some progress on the chassis / interior tub. I added weld seams and tape based on some reference pictures as well as some photoetched parts from the SMS set.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0140.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0141.jpg
Then painted and weathered it again based on some reference pictures I've seen of the car as it raced. I really love the race cars from this era because they were so rough and raw. None of the clinically clean presented cars of today.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0160.jpg
I've also started on the dash

That is so true about restored cars. Any production based Group 5 car had heavy new welds on top of the factory welding. I remember seeing a Porsche 908/3 with an all new perfect fiberglass tub. It almost made me laugh. The rat like Porsche fiberglass from the 1960's-1970's was very crude looking.
Great build. I wish you lived closer to Chicago. I would love to see this at the Ferrari Expo model contest(not just Ferrari's).

Dear Rob,
this is spectacular work.
I try to say it as decent as possible but i think this is one of those threads this forum might be intended for.
I have a smile on my face when reading your posts and looking at your work because pure pleasure and fun are screaming out of every digital bit!
Your skills are superb. From my point of view your way of dealing materials and instruments is reference class, you also go that step further with your incredible weathering technics and solutions for showing realistic surfaces and rough / used / heat worn components such as the muffler.....
Thanks for taking us with you on a trip through the 7th dimension of (car)modelling.
Take your time with this reference built!
Yours
Jochen

Thank you very much for the nice comments!
@robrex: your's glass part in kit, do they have a stripe in the middle in front windshield and wired stripes on other big glassy part? I don't like that in my kit.
Yes I do! I'm going to replace the kit glass with clear plastic anyway so luckily it won't effect me. It is annoying though! Things like that can spoil what is otherwise a great model even box stock.
here's the almost finished dash. I made the glass out of thermaform as previously shown in my 312T build. The tacho has real needles which were made from watch hands.

An oustanding modelling work, all us know the SMS set, but the weathering and details you made it places this in other dimension. Well done! :banghead:

Very nice. Looks just like a real 1970's Porsche racecar, not a model!!

Awesome Rob ( not that i expected anything else :-)
I'm really amazed by that used look you achieve on the parts. This will really set the finsihed build apart from all the other 935s built with the SMS kit as they are usually very clean. A joy to follow!
On a nother note...i wanna say a special thank you!!
Back when you did the 312T you mentioned Plasti-Dip which i had never seen before. I sure got a can of that stuff. So far i haven't used it on a model but ever since i have a pair of my pointy tweezers dipped in it, it saved me sooo much "knee-time" and kept me from scratching metal parts! You really made my modeling life easier!! :-)
Cheers
Jaykay

You're doing a fantastic job on this, Rob. The weathering (especially on the floorpan) looks utterly amazing!

Ok, here's another quick update
I scratch built the fuse box and left the lid off to allow better access during a race

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0187.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0188.jpg
I also got some paint on the body. I used base coat white and then cleared with 2K. The decals are the Tamiya Cartograf ones from the recent release which I borrowed from a friend  I've ordered a replacement set so hopefully I'll be able to return the new set soon
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0192.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0191.jpg
I also filled the screw holes in the bottom of the body and made little lugs the same diameter as the screw holes in the chassis. It now simply clips together during assembly. I don't plan on taking the body off so I'll glue the lugs in once complete for added strength.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0194.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b246/robrex/Porsche%20935/DSCF0195.jpg
I forgot about the mesh in the front fender so I'll use a micro saw and cut a fine slit on the inside of the panel so the mesh screen can slide into place :loser:
I also thinned down the vents using my dremel and then dipped a course brush in thinners and jabbed the surface until the thinners dried to replicate the rough finish just like on the fuel tank

Interesting trick! I'll have to keep that in mind.
