My 2001 SC1 Saturn is having a problem and it doesn't seem to be going away. I've been hearing a grinding/scraping noise on the driver's side whenever I brake at low speeds. I took it to a family friend and he said the pads and rotors were fine and ended up filing down and greasing some parts. The problem came back about a few days later. Took the car back to the same guy and he decided to replace the brake pads and rotors to see if that would solve it. And of course the problem came back. Perhaps he thought the problem was solved because the sound is not apparent until it is driven for some time. It only occurs after driving for about 10 minutes, braking at low speeds such as stopping at a light or stop sign, or slowing down. Sounds like something is scraping with each rotation of the tire. I also noticed a clingling/clicking sound when the car is coasting, again with each rotation of the tire. This noise stops when the brakes are applied.

We took it to the guy again yesterday and he said he fixed it by doing something else, not sure what- we drove it home and it made no noise. I drove it for a little last night and it seemed fine. I just was driving around for a half hour looking at Halloween displays and by the time I came home, the sound was back as usual. Do you have any idea what is causing this?? I put up my problem on a Saturn fan forum site and I got 2 responses saying it has something to do with the front wheel bearings. We mentioned it to our guy yesterday he said he didn't think it had anything to do with that and if it did, it would be making a different sound. I mean this guy has been doing work for us at a very low cost and I'm afraid I'm going to take it to an auto shop, they'll charge me a few hundred dollars, and the problem will come back shortly after. Any input would be great.

bad wheel bearings would be a constant noise. Not just specific to braking.

Turn the wheel slightly when you brake. Does one direction differ the noise from the other?

Next: Drive around untill you hear this noise. Then go home and put the car on jack stands so that the front wheel are off the ground. Take the tires off, Start the car, put it in gear, hit the brakes. See if you can locate the noise.

Its odd that new pads didnt fix the issue. You have a unique problem :)

The noise is definitely apparent when driving straight. I have turned before and noticed the the noise quiets or is nonexistant during turns.

You need to put it up on jack stands. if its a bad wheel bearing the noise would disappear since no weight is on the bearing

ok I will see if I can do that tomorrow, thanks. I have another friend taking a look at it so hopefully we can solve it.
