I have successfully disabled the DRL's and the alc on my 2004 grand am, if anyone is interested in the procedure, I'll post it. I am able to switch between manual activated headlights and automaticn (ka ching) while driving, no plug and play, just a switch

I thought on this model you just had to remove the DRL relay and connect the 2 wires on the ALC.
This site has most of the info on DRL disabling, www.lightsout.org .

the drl was just relay #22, it dosen't throw a svs light
the alc, you cannot tie the wires togather, this will throw a svs light, and your headlights will be on all the time. I used a couple of wires running from the sensor to a box where I have a 3.3volt zener diode and a switch hooked in series, this will "short" the sensor wires down to about three volts, the sensor usually took it down to 2.4, or 2.5, however, this is enough for the computer to think it is light whenever the switch is on.

Well wouldnt a resistor that lowered the voltage to 2.5vlts work. .for the ALC ? :dunno:

If you use a resistor, you can't be sure of the voltage across it, especially if you leave the sensor in the circuit, with a zener diode, you guarantee that the voltage never rises above what the zener is rated for so your lights don't come on, and the zener has some resistance in it, so it wont be like a dead short either.

It just sucks they try and make it difficult on most vehicles to disable the DRL's or auto lights on.
Its not manditory in the USA and its probly not going to be anytime soon, they shouldnt even bother.
Probly save a few hundred dollars in production costs too. :grinyes:

I think its kinda dumb, you should be able to have that option, In my case, I make that option, and enjoy doing so. My car is mine, and I will do what I want to it. If its legal or not is the question, and this is obviously legal, so it should be optional also.

In my wife Chevy truck keeps burning out the bulbs so I just quit putting bulbs in. They would last about 30 or so. I am glad that my GP does not have drl. They are a pain in the arse, and a waste of money. Who ever thought of drl is plain retarded.

Well, I can see their pont for safety issues, it easier for someone to see your car, but my car is white..........DRL has its pros and cons, but in my case the ALC was the killer, I often leave my multifunction lever in the bright position, and when the headlights come on without warning, or when you put papers on the dash, you brightlight everyone you meet until you realize they are on........BAD IDEA

I for the most part have my low beams on and my fog lamps on. I rarely have my bright lights on.

I live in a rural area, and commute roughly 3-400 miles every weekend, so, I use them all a lot, but only when I need them. Maybe it will prolong the life of an under powered electrical system.

That is true, and and I understand about racking up the mileage. I was a field engineer, and I racked up almost 3k a week.

I disabled mine because they were burning thru to many high beams and the sylvainia SS are expensive.

I just like turning on my parking lights before it gets dark, with the fogs on, and all the other GA drivers look at me funny. :D

Plus, the ALC makes for bad stalking....

I did hate that, drive through a shaded part in the road and your lights would come on then go off when you came out of the shade. :banghead:

yeah it does. i just tried it on my 2000 GA, installed the jumper, and the SVS light came on and that damned chime. i stuck the relay back in - the bell and the SVS light would be more annoying than the DRLs... i do want to disable them, though.... i just put projector lamps in the car, and both high and low beams come on in daytime. at night, everything works as it should but the DRLs are messed up... anyone know of a REAL way to disable them without having to put up with the SVS light and chime?

or just pull e-brake handle for one tooth. It will not cause any brake drag.
