Shake, rattle, and roll..........

I have had my fair share of issues with my '94 Lesabre, but the cosmetic and basic electrical, I can deal with. I mostly like to tinker with the mechanical, but something has gotten my goat as of late. I have seen many of the posts that have to deal with the transmission shudder and may have settled that this may be the issue. I have had the motor mounts replaced in '98 and have shaken the wheels and guesstimated that it isn't the CV's and haven't head any squealing from wheel bearings, so it may be the transmission. I have a vibration in the car when I go past the speed of 60 or 65 mph, not when I am at idle, or at no other time. I wish I had the money for a diagnostic, but I have asked several people and they said that the solenoid for the torque converter lockup might be going bad. Of course the shops want your money, so they tell me to bring it in. An auto parts shop owner said that his brother has the same car and that is what caused the problem on his vehicle. All I have to do is unplug the sensor and drive it for a bit. If it goes away, then all I have to do is replace it, then take it in and have the computer reset. The Trans shop tech told me that the car wouldn't even drive once anything electrical is unplugged from the transmission and that could even cause damage to it. Can anyone help with any advice, preferably an A.S.E. certified mechanic??? Thanks.

Welcome to AF. A misfire can occur when the TCC is engaged and the engine is loaded, this translates into a shudder/vibration as some may describe. Usually this occurs shortly after lock up is engaged and under load. Or pulling an incline just prior to downshift. TCC slippage can cause similar symptoms and only a full trans scan looking at tcc slippage errors will really eliminate the tcc as the cause. Disconnecting the tcc eliminates engine load so it can mask a misfire. Tough diagnosis as a rule. This all assumes the "vibration" is engine related, not a bad tire or axle shaft. Someone knowledgeable should really drive this for a proper diagnosis.
