how many miles are on your GT, and when was your last tune up? any SES lights?? i would start with the easy things like plugs, wires, and fuel filter.

Car has 228,000km. , plugs @ approx. 160,000 ,wiring and tune up last fall @ 200,000. Problem seems to be getting worse. Maybe I'll try a fuel filter and/or tune up.

could also maybe be a bad TPS or IAC. you could try cleaning them both and see what happens.
