OK, those horrible resin nightmares are gone and with a gigantic sigh of relief I open the box of a model, test fit a few parts and whaddya know, THEY FIT TOGETHER!!

It's good to be back with Tamiya :iceslolan

So this is the new project, another Porsche but the beautiful 911 GT1. As garish as it looks I really like this colour scheme and I think the real car looks just mind blowing (for those of you who have seen it up close!)

Anyway, as my old 917 build this has the Renaissance transkit allowing me to open the doors which I intend to do. I will be 'going to town' with the details as I did before and I think my previous two 'curbside' builds have made me want to get back to 'real' modeling even more.

So first up here's what you get in the box...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01098.jpg

and the few extras I have picked up...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01094.jpg

I have also ordered the Scale Motorsport C/F Decal set which will considerably help with decaling all those carbon bits (of which there are plenty!)

I am also looking for some nice reference pics of the car, mainly the engine bay. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be eternally grateful!

oh it's good to be back on a plastic kit and who better than the big T!!!!

Looks good so far. I had a horrible time with the fit and finish of mine. mostly the rear lid, wheels, and spoiler. the decals were troublesome (ripping), but it looks ok.

I'm tuned :)

Sean, if you need spares for this give me a shout.
I bought this kit cheap with a partly painted but not decaled body for a restoration but it I didn't notice that it was missing the wheels doh! I am pretty sure I'll never build it so it's yours if you need it including the decals.

chopping done, however with a big thaks to Jaykay I have managed to get enough reference information to allow me to open up the bonnet too, so using the Tamiya needle saw, a brand new blade and then a few delicate strokes with the needle files we are left with this...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01099.jpg

as you can see in the next pic, the chassis detail is almost asking for the bonnet to be opened up (top of front suspension detail included). Yes I will have a lot of scratch building to do in the front as there is no more included understandably as it normally would be hidden from view...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01100.jpg
no dramas in the end and the Renassiance doors fit reasonably well too which is a bonus, I may have to do a little tweeking here and there but so far so good as they say!

Magnificient project.

Couple of days ago I was playing with the idea doing this one a "full view" as Tamiya offered them a while ago.

Nice to see you being back to detailing - I´m eager to learn once again.

Good luck with all your plans for your modifications.

Hi Sean

Yours builds have this remarkably strange behaviour of being the same as mine - with one exception - you seem to get yours finished...!!!

I have for centuries... okay slightly exaggerated - have the same transkit of Renaissance with the opening doors in my to do pile. Maybe this build will make me finish mine? But I said the same with the FW-12 build - oh well...

The difficult thing about this one is the door sills, that isn't included in the trans kit. Trying to match up to the interior and bridging the gap between the bodyshell and the interior 'bucket' will bring endless fun!

Regards

Flemming

Hey Flemming,

just call me a copycat eh! As for the sills, funny you should mention that, I am just looking at how best to bridge the gap at the moment, all I can say at the moment is...

Blimey, this takes me back. Must have built one of these nearly ten years ago. I used the ren doors too. Out of the box it's an awesome kit, the proportions are spot on. I always wanted to do the full carbon version...just didn't get around to it. Looking forward to seeing this one come together.

very nice project and good luck with it. I'm currentyl in the finishing stages of an "all-open" Toyota GT-one and it's a nightmare because after all my modifications to the bodywork the fit of parts is gone :-( so be sure to do a lot of testfitting even it is a Tamiya kit :-)

more prep work...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01121.jpg

this is the floor plan for the cockpit and needs a little correction here and there, I drilled out the holes which were already nicely marked out for me...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01122.jpg

and then also cut off the moulded gear lever surround, this was much too bulky compared tot he real one and I will scratch another to replace it...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01123.jpg

to get around the problem of having large gaps between the door sills and the cockpit I cut off the bottoms of parts A21 & A22 which are the door inners and re-positioned them to line up with the outershell...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01120.jpg

and in position ( a bit blurred - sorry!)...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01126.jpg

the Renaissance doors are nicely moulded but I want to replace the grab handles with more accurate ones so they will have to go too...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01130.jpg

the seat also needs the little inset removing which you can see at the top of the seat ...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01131.jpg

finally I also had a look at the trans & motor, first alterations are to remove the moulded pipes and tubes from the side of the trans and oil reservoir at the back, these will all be replaced with real tubing...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01128.jpg

these now look like this...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01129.jpg

a little boring this update I know but having made the decision to do another full detail build this stage has to be done, I'm eager to start getting some paint on but patience, patience eh

thanks for your interest and a big thanks to Klutz_100 for sending me his old kit, I can now attack my kit without worring about breaking stuff, thanks again Ste!

more prep work...

this is the surround for the pedals, I will need to remove the accelerator pedal and the moulded foot rest on the left hand side as this will be replaced with...

this...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01154.jpg

I must say the Scale Motorsport & Renaissance etch sets are excellent, more cockpit floor stuff...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01155.jpg

I have already been sprayed these white...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01157.jpg

along with the floorplan...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01156.jpg

replacement parts for the pedals...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01158.jpg

finally the moulded fire extinguisher is a little brutal so I have found an old unit in the spares box and will add my own straps and fixings...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01159.jpg

update...

and so on to some details...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01160.jpg

fire extinguisher is now ready, I will attach the two hoses to this later.

right along the top of the trans tunnel runs the yellow accelerator cable. I added this using some thin wire, some plastic tubing and built a little bracket from etch sprue. I also removed the etch accelerator pedal and added a little brack to the bottom of it.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01161.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01162.jpg

more to come soon!

Wow can't believe i missed this one. Beautiful work thus far. The floor pan is starting to look amazing. The pe looks so much better than plastic. Also the doors seem to fit quite well. It seems like my reniassance gt2 doors shrunk or something, but they are really off after i opened one side and made a test fit. Thats what you get from buying from ebay though!!
Defenitly keep us posted as this should be a master piece once done.

update...

to get around the problem with these gaps called for a widening of this back panel...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01163.jpg

so I measured out a couple of 'ears'...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01167.jpg

and they fit nicely (after a little trial and error I have to admit...)

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01164.jpg

More details added to the passenger footwell. The computer is supplied in resin in the renaissance kit, i drilled some holes in it to take some electric connectors (from the Top Studio set). This was then covered in Scale Motorsport C/F (1/24 scale).

I added the small comms block and some coiled cabling which leads to the little grey box just inside the sill. On the other end of the black box I will add two further blue cables - one leads to the drivers helmet, the other to the back of the dash.

The other addition is a rather neat little drinks holder that is included in the both the SM & Renaissance sets, I used the one from the SM set as it was slightly better detailed.

The small etched pieces on the back panel on the passenger side are from the Renaissance set and will hold the TV Cameras, more cables will be needed here too:runaround:

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01171.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01172.jpg

and just to make sure it all fits in the shell so far...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01169.jpg

hopefully I will get another day on this tomorrow too...

Hi , absolutely not terribly, I use the translator.:) thanks for good words, your project forces me to start to work above mine. more progress...

a little slow in the last couple of weeks and this is definately now going to be the last build of 2008, only five completed this year, really not good when I look at the 'to do' pile :headshake

anyway, removed the moulded grab handle on the inside of the doors which I will replace with a much nicer version...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01186.jpg

also built up the Renaissance supplied electrical box, i added my own connectors (Top Studio) and a strap from etch sprue...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01190.jpg

the seat was straightforward enough, after I had cut out the section to the right of the drivers head, I decaled the back with some C/F andused embossing powder for the front...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01194.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01195.jpg

added some more details to the passenger floor and footwell, fire extinguisher hoses, more electrical leads and the remaining, eletrical box. Also scratched a couple of seat belt brackets on the bulkhead...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01197.jpg

all in place with the belts added to the seat. I used Renaissance hardware for the buckles etc.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01198.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01199.jpg

finally and onto the engine block, I removed the moulded hoses that are on top of the main block, these will be replaced with real hoses when i get round to the engine, a while yet me thinks...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01188.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01189.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01201.jpg

I got the embossing powder from a crafts supplier on ebay, Im sorry I cant remember who but it is fairly common and very cheap too. I think it comes in lots of colours. A couple of pots is all I have and I reckon that should last me forever. As long as your careful and put the powder you dont use back in the pot. I always use a big white piece of paper under the part Im covering and then carefully pour it back into the pot.

a little further progress with the interior...

now that the seat is installed I added the blue comms cable which plugs into the driver's helmet, I also added a seat adjustment bracket and lever just in front of the seat as per my references...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01210.jpg

next up the dash...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01200.jpg

I drilled out the two holes for the cooling ducts which I will scratch build next. this was painted as per my references and I used more embossing powder for the top. The kit comes with the decal for the main section in front of the driver. I then covered the centre section with C/F and picked out the controls with a little hand painting. I have a few little more add ons to this yet...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Porsche%20911%20GT1/DSC01206.jpg

finally built the roll cage, I have removed the holes which were designed to fasten to the inside of the doors. Again there are a couple of further details to add to this before its installed.

thanks to all, should have a more progress over the next couple of days...

the flocking powder was bought on ebay - it was from a crafts shop, although it was some time ago now and I cant find the name of the seller I bought it from, it was in the UK though as I recall.

If you put in 'embossing powder' in the ebay search field it brings up hundreds!

Great detail work of the inside. The dash looks great, and I like the amount of wires you added, and the texture of the seat is very nice.

I'm waiting to see more photos!!

thanks to all, should have a more progress over the next couple of days...

the flocking powder was bought on ebay - it was from a crafts shop, although it was some time ago now and I cant find the name of the seller I bought it from, it was in the UK though as I recall.

If you put in 'embossing powder' in the ebay search field it brings up hundreds!

Thank you!

You should be able to find embossing powder at any store that caters to card makers or scrapbookers, etc.

It's used to make embossed lettering and designs on greeting cards, etc.

My wife uses it when making our Christmas cards, etc. I've never thought of raiding her stash of it for modeling purposes, though.

I guess if she doesn't catch me.....

a little more progress...

cockpit is now just about finished, the parts to add were the dashboard and steering wheel. I added some etch screw heads to the centre of the wheel and also added a switch for the radio, also added the coiled cable. If you look just to the left of the wheel you can just pick out the little starting key I made from some old etch (was particularly chuffed with this - little things please me eh!!!)
I managed to roughly pick out a 'Momo' logo with the smallest brush in the world - its not perfect but still adds a little here I think.

I also remade the cooling tubes for the driver as the moulded ones in the kit left a little to be desired, I remade them simply from some coiled thin wire and covering them in thick coats of matt black until the gaps between the coils were filled - nothing over difficult but a little time consuming - nevertheless looks betterthan the kit versions I think and also they are hollow which adds to their realism.
