StarterHI JOHN 10-03-2008, 05:29 AM I Have A 97 Rodeo And From What I've Read It Is A Pain In The Neck When It Comes To Change The Starter. You Have To Remove The Whole Exhaust System. Well,,, Not Any More. I Follow The Instructions Some Of You Have Posted Plus Mine And You Don't Have To Remove The Exhaust System. Step 1. Remove The Driver Wheel 2. Remove The Plastic Cover Divider/ Just Half So You Can See The Starter. This Is Like A Mud Flap, You Can Put It Back Again Just Make Sure You Don't Rip It When Trying To Get It Out. 3.remove The 2 screws holding the Motor Mount So You Can Jack Up The Engine A Little When Removing The Starter. 4.remove The 2 Bolts Holding The Starter, You May Have To Remove The Heat Shild Next To The Starter For Better Access, It Is Only 2 Bolts. Make Sure You Disconect The Cables From The Starter. 5. Lift The Engine With A Jack And Make Sure You Have A Piece Of Wood Like A 2x4 To Protect The Oil Pan. The Starter Will Not Come Out Becasue The Exhaust Is In The Way. 6. Here It Come The Cool Part, Disconect The Cable That Goes From The Starter To The Selenoid This Is A Must For The Next Step. 7.you See That The Starter Has 2 Long Screws/bolts. Place A Piece Of Duck Tape On One Side Of The Starter To Keep It In One Piece When You Remove The 2 Long Screws And Split In In Half. 8. Be Careful When Separating The Unit, After You Have Done This Remove One Piece At A Time And Bingo There You Go With Out Having To Remove The Exhaust System. 9. If You Happen To Open The Starter In 3 Parts Is Not A Problem You Can Put It Back Verry Easy. Most Likely It Got Out Of The Bottom Where The 4 Black Leads Are. Just Unscrew The Cap At The Bottom And You Can Put The Leads Back And Put It Together Again. Very Easy. 10. Make Sure You Are Very Carful When Istalling The New One, If By Any Chance Splits In 3 Make Sure You Don't Contaminate The Inside With Dirt Or Anything Else. Good Luck And Have Fun.
