McLaren F1 is one of my the most lovely cars. And now my dream has come true. Simultaneously with creation of Stratos Zero I have decided to start to assemble this kit. I bought this in september,2007 from www.1999.co.jp (http://www.1999.co.jp) for 18,750 yen (approximately 175$).

Before to assemble it, I wish to copy a bodyshell to make in future the road version. But at first I will make some works on it. All pillars have been bent, and I have corrected they by a lighter flame heating and then has puttied by polyester putty.

This is a nice one!
I recently got the '95 Gulf car ( i like that version of the Gulf livery better, along with the yellow and green Harrod's car ) with open(ing ) doors ..... but in 1:43 :-) I'll follow your build with interest!

The only thing I hate about these kits are the chassis. The body has great detail, but the chassis looks like a brick. Looks good so far, keep up the good work:)

Nope, not the Renaissance....Provence Moulage.
That was less than half the price of the Renaissance and it will only be a fraction of the trouble:-) I have my second Renaissance kit in the works ( a 935/77....it's....somewhere ) and i don't have the mental strength yet to burden myself with another one. Beautiful PE and turned bits....but too often resin parts from hell! Pity!

I built 2 of these kits, both had one major problem that I will point out so that you can try to fix before its too late.

The kits I bought were white resin, I don't know if it shrinks more than the gray resin but the windows did not fit. I had to cut them apart and glue the everloving crap out of them to get them to mount in the proper location. The "A" pillar is extremely difficult because the interior side is rounded, not flat.

The other problem was test fitting all along, everything was fine, but when everything was ready to screw the chassis to the body, something was hitting keeping me from getting them into the proper location. I still don't know what the problem was, but it could have been from the windows, in that my solution was bad.

Now that I think about it, the wheels are in the wrong place as well, they look too small and the ride height is off so move the mounting point of the front axle to try making it less of an eyesore.

Thank you, grundski! I already know all of these problems and more. First of all, it is not pleasant to me wrong dimensions and inaccuracy & asymmetrical form of a bodyshell :disappoin . For example, the wheel base is shorter more than 3 mm. I already have started to think about creation of a new body by using a 3D model and CNC machine.
But for now I continue to work on this.
I finished the roof...

Brave indeed. I wouldn´t have the trust into my abilities to cut a *** USD-expensive resin kit. You have faith...

With all the parts separated this will be one hell of a model - gives you lots of room for extreme detailling.

It is very difficult to correct all these mistakes. I have decided to make a fresh start. At present my brother creates 3D body model. I want to scratchbuild a road version too.

Well that's a brave move:-) I can see your point and i admire your will to get it as accurate as possible! On the other hand i have learned from own experiments that sometimes it's just as fine to leave things as they are ( as long as they are not really obvious mistakes ). After a while when the model is finished you won't see them anymore and enjoy the result anyway.
Just make sure you're not causing yourself more troubles with the decals. I f you change the body proportions they may not fit well enough anymore...

Really nice project and I look forward to seeing your work.

I would suggest to be careful when overlaying model pictures with reference photos in Photoshop etc. as per you example (IMHO, the model looks pretty close already). From my experience you need to not only get exactly the right angle to photograph the model as the original reference picture but you need to get the same lens length which you'll only be able to guess at. Trust me, the edges of a car can wrap away differently in a 100mm v 300mm lens picture, even from a distance. This coupled with a slight misalignment in placing the camera for the model picture can get all sorts of distortion (see the difference between your picture 1 and 2. Check your second photo has the correct aspect ratio (eg. the wheels are perfectly round) and take another model photo a little higher, as you are too low right now).

I reckon the model roofline is the most inaccurate part of the body (too high) and you have scaled the picture to this dimension. Scale the picture to the wheel arch distance instead and the rest of the body may be more in proportion!

Good luck with it anyway!:licka:

As you see the reality is much more bad than I has shown earlier.
The wheelbase is 108,5mm by platform and approximately 110mm by arches, but it must be 113,3mm!!! The body lenght is 174mm without front spoiler, but it must be 181,9mm minus about 3mm for spoiler=about 179mm!!! Yes, as you said the roof is higher, shorter and more round in the rear. All the rest rough mistakes you may to see on my new pic. above.

Now I have a different question. I see your brother is working out a CAD model in CATIA V5. I shall be grateful if you/he can tell which CATIA module is used to make such construnstions (Free surface, Generative shape design... etc.). A tutorial is highly appreciated.

Then these points are converting to Catia and all the next constructions makes in Generative shape design.

I´m not trying to stop you, but aren´t actually looking for trouble here?

Before you start all this mess, please ask yourself whether the modifications on your scratch build will be visible withe the sole eye of a human. I mean we´re talking 1/24 here and youare not about to change a wrong or misplaced decal...

When you answer this question with a sincerely "Yes!", I´m more than eager to see more of this scratchbuild-fest it will be.

Regards and good luck

I've done a little work in Catia but I don't know that much about "Powermill".
I currently work in Solid Works and there is a 3D resin plotter available on the market (perfect for any type model). I assume that your doing a similar set up by uploading the 3D drawing to the machine tooling queue and then machining a resin block. Or if your doing something different please explain?

As for the changes and modifications you are correct that doing them in a 3D model is about as accurate as you can get. Plus any changes can be "test fitted" in you computer model!

Keep up the great work!

Very impressive!

How much time does it take for the mill to cut that piece out of the block?

Very nice work. Funny thing is the Studio 27 kit master was made by Hiro.
It really helps when you put in the correct measurements for the model! I know Hiro still has big problems doing Tires correctly(and car bodies!!).

How much time does it take for the mill to cut that piece out of the block?
It took about 7 hours, and for rear wing about 5 hours.
