the odometer on my 99 expedition goes on and off. doesn't appear to be any pattern, sometimes it just gets dimmer

I know I'm late getting to this post, but I've actually seen this one before, it's usually the dimmer switch next to the headlight switch...but it's pretty pricey so unless I could get a good reading with an ohm-meter, I'd probably live with it (or put in my known good one in my toolbox and see if it stops...yes the professionals cheat every now and again!) Good luck with it.

:uhoh: I had the same problem with my 1999 Expedition especially in humid/damp weather. The bad news is that you have to remove the gage cluster, the good news is that it may be due to a cold solder joint, that takes $.05 of solder. I fixed mine over 130,000 miles ago, and have had no repeat of the failure.
You may want to look for a cracked/corroded ground pin on the backside of the printed circuit board (directly behind the odometer read out). There is a great link that explains the procedure:
Hopefully this link will atttach.
