***EDIT-------Change of plans! More news soon.......***

Anyway, standard Revell '06 Monte kit. I opened the front grill, roof flaps, cowl, and added a new fuel filler from aluminum tubing. The hood has new underside braces, and has been hinged. The deck lid has been removed, a new brass spoiler added, and more underside details added.

I also removed the side skirts, and will make new ones after the body is painted and decaled.

Here's where it's at right now, ready for base white, and neon yellow.

The chassis is a heavily modified PF kit chassis. I shortened up the rear section and will add the tin panel to seal the back end off in final assembly. Most of the roll bars were replaced with .080 rod. I removed the floor section behind the roll bar hoop and made a new oil tank box. Front end bars and front bumper were also totally re done. Once all the fab work was done I primed it, shot it with my mix of HoK chassis gray, and cleared it. It's ready for detailing now!

Looking good so far. Another masterpiece in the making I'm sure.

Looks like I will miss going to Atlanta this year, unfortunately. But I will be at the Night Before Toledo/COMA meeting in Dayton that Friday night on the 10th.

Actually, I'm moving to Dayton around the first of the year.

Well as you can see, I came to my senses and scratched the Kyle Busch idea. Anyway, still can do lots without worry about what paint scheme it will be. I haven't had a lot of building time since Atlanta, but I do sneak some in now and then.

Diving back into it, I added Pro tech roll bar padding, new side pad from embossing metal flocked with DM flocking, and a black styrene cover for the oil tank with Pro tech dzus buttons. Front a arms have been painted and detailed with RB Motion goodies, even got the lowers cleaned up and ready to install. Also I got the standard cig foil heat shield on the bottom.

Also got a big jump on the rear suspension. Kit truck arms with an AMT diff. the spring perches are AAA, and I turned the pulleys for the diff pump. On the underside, I added tabs and RB Motion 1501 linkages for the dual stiffener braces. It's ready for plumbing and brakes.

I built up a new fuel line using aluminum tubing and plastic for the stand. Painted it One Shot red, and added some Powerslide Fuel Line decals. I also built up a new CF floor mat. This is just plastic sheet with a lip built around the edge. Covered in SMS CF decal film, and then coated with Future.

On the bottom side, I found a really cool shot of a real Cup car that showed a gold heat shielding lining the inside of the oil can box. So I lined mine with cig. foil and painted it clear yellow.

To fill the space, I machined a new oil tank like my Kasey Kahne car. I added masking tape painted with HoK Molly Orange for the heater blanket, and wired it up. Also added a few oil lines, and installed it.

I did a two piece fuel cell this time. Normally I get lazy and do it all as one, shot it black and install it. But this time I wanted to do it right. I built the framework from Evergreen plastic stock, and shot it Krylon black. The fuel cell is .040 sheet plastic shot with Tamiya TS 8 red. The Waterman and Fuel Safe decals came from the Powerslide goodies sheet. I was thinking ahead when I drew that one! LOL

Anyway, got it installed and plumbed. I'm doing all black braid on this one. Pro Tech hose brush painted with thinned Tamiya NATO black. Kind of a grayish flat black.

http://images44.fotki.com/v1410/photos/1/174078/6738670/P1279010-vi.jpg

I did a bit more to the rear end as well. Still needs brake lines, but I haven't done anything on the rotors or hats yet, so I'm in no hurry.

http://images47.fotki.com/v1397/photos/1/174078/6738677/P1249002-vi.jpg

Also added yet another heat shield under the seat. This one is just smooth embossing metal. It will be covered by the seat, but I got tired of seeing the spot where I had mounted my painting rod.

Small update on this one too. Still not sure what car it will be, but I'm still trying to make some progress. One big hurdle I had was the rotor hats. A good night machining and I've got four new rotor hats turned and machined ready for detailing! The lug studs will be guitar string, and the PE rotors are from Model Car Garage.

Now th at's funny! Thanks Gio. :)

More progress!

Alright.......we got some brakes. I'm painting the calipers now, but here is the rotating stuff. MCG rotors, my turned hats, and Pro Tech PE nuts around the edges. The lug studs are guitar string as usual.

Small tip, I found a quick way to evenly space all those bolts around the outside edge of the hat. If you notice, each one is where one of the cooling grooves on the rotor meets the hat. I just put a dot of glue on each of those spots and dropped on the PE nut. And ta-da. Eight evenly spaced bolts. I also added some temp. paint to the fronts with Tamiya jar paints.

And here's the final paint job. Jeff ran this special scheme to go along with the Superman Returns movie back in '06.

http://images46.fotki.com/v1516/photos/1/174078/6738684/nascarcup2006da2tm0008-vi.jpg

This is what I'll be doing. Working on the plate nose now. Decals will be a mix of Powerslide, JWTBM, and some of my own Alps stuff. The rest will be all paint. Six pack and all!

With no travel scheduled, I spent most of the weekend hard at work. Since I had decided earlier in the week to go with the Superman car, the first thing I wanted to tackle was the nose. I sanded the skirt smooth on the edges and then filled in the gap all the way across the nose with epoxy putty. Once it was sanded smooth I added a new skirt from .015 plastic and shot it in primer to see how things were looking. I've also spent a few nights recently thinning the fender edges the be super thin and I think it's really going to pay off.

http://images49.fotki.com/v1509/photos/1/174078/6738672/P5319354-vi.jpg

http://images46.fotki.com/v1516/photos/1/174078/6738672/P5319356-vi.jpg

Next up was getting the front suspension further along to catch up to the rear end. Looking at a pic of Jeff's Daytona car showed he ran the pointy front hubs so I machined a new set of those and mounted the front rotors to the a-arms. Also if you look in there close I turned two new front sprint perches. Now I can add the springs, tie rods, shocks, and sway bar arms, and I'm just about done with the front end.

http://images50.fotki.com/v1512/photos/1/174078/6738677/P5319361-vi.jpg

After I got the front send that far along, I decided to let it set a while, and get back to the engine. I had dabbled with it months ago, but since I was rolling along I dug it back out. One thing I wanted to update was the bell housing to the newer reverse mounted starter style. I found a resin piece in my parts bin and drilled out the side, then mounted it to some sheet plastic to give it the proper shape. Once it was glued to the block I ran out and turned two pieces of brass real quick, and made up a simple looking starter. Long way to go obviously, but I always try to start with a good foundation, and so far I'm digging it!

I'm determined to make myself use the mill more. One thing I had in mind was a new radiator. After the success over the weekend with the other machining, I decided to give it a shot. I don't think I'm actually going to use this one because now that it is done, I see where I can make the next one better. But it was fun to try. I machined out a area for the DM radiator screen and then filled it in flat black before it was installed. Everything else was done on the mill.

Clay your machine work has come a long way since you first got your machines. I'm digging the radiator. I have a question about the rotors, I noticed you put some different color paint around the outer surface, is that heat temp paint? What is it's purpose on the real car? That's something I've never seen before.

PS - Shot you an email the other day!

Wow! Thank you very much for the comments guys!!

I've only been using my airbrush to blow away metal shavings lately, but I need to get going on some paint! But in the mean time.....

I haven't had any large blocks of time to sit and build so I just do bits here and there. Last night was engine plate night. I'm getting more and more comfortable with the steps needed to do things like this. Still not perfect, but you should see my other attempts! LOL Anyway, I kinda jacked up the slots on the one side, I think my bit was going bad on me, but that area will be covered by the power steering set-up anyway. You can see I also sanded the front of the engine a bit to make sure this will mount as flat as possible. Now I can detail this piece a bit, get the water pump mounted, and start adding pulleys and belts.

I need to run brake lines but before I do that I need master cylinders. I made up this plate that will glue right to the firewall. The bottles are machined resin, the caps are brass soaked in blacken•it, and the lower parts are crimp tubes. This whole unit is now ready to be installed, and then I can start plumbing.

One area I'm always trying to improve is the front suspension. Ever since the great Mopar truck no tie rod debacle, I've made it a point to really try hard on the front end!

So, here's what I did last night. I thought the sway bar arms could really be done better. I have used PE before and it looked OK, but the shape was wrong. On my Kahne car I used some scratch built plastic ones that had the right shape, but looked dull. So on this one I thought all day at work about how I could machine some and went home and tried it out. I held a piece of aluminum stock in a mill vice, mounted on my rotary table. Then I marked out the general shape I wanted and trued up the square sides. then I could rotate the stock 20 degrees and do the other sides as well as the front edge with the slight cut out. I made my cuts deep enough I could get two at once from the same piece of metal. Next I drilled the holes and then parted them off with a cutting wheel.

Here's how the look cleaned up, and you can see the stock with the shape of one still on there. I made two fake sway bar ends from brass and blackened them and topped the arms off with some Pro Tech .030 PE nuts. They will hang a little lower when they are mounted for good, but I wanted to give them a quick test fit to see how they were going to look. Mission accomplished!

http://images49.fotki.com/v1519/photos/1/174078/6738677/P6109407-vi.jpg

There's really even more that could be done to them. Lightening slots, lightening holes, both. Once it's chucked up you can do anything you want to it. I just wanted a plain set to see if I could do it, but the next set might look a bit tricker!

Thanks for looking and all the great comments. I'm having a blast!!

What is the 'the great Mopar truck no tie rod debacle'?

Thank you very much! That means a lot coming from you.

The Mopar truck thing was kind of a joke. I built it back in 2004 and it did really well almost every where I entered it. But I had to come clean and admit I had left off the tie rods off of the front end! I had run out of time before the first contest I took it to, and nobody had ever caught it. So since then I make damn sure I've got my front ends in order!

Here's the truck, and as you can see.........whoops. No tie rods!

Flemming

... it is my opinion, but here it seems, that not the model gets the rating but maybe personal factors or ratings from those, who give a low rating, are envious, because they will never reach this level ????

2 solutions: the possibility of rating should be banned or it should be visible, WHO gave which rating, how many stars.

Thanks for all the great comments and support guys. I really appreciate it!

I've been spending most of my little free time practicing at the metal shaving processors, but took a break and got back to some actual building.

After looking at my sad steering shaft I had in there, I attempted to make a new one with my first shot at machining scale u-joint knuckles. I made two, and they both worked! Now I just gotta make two more to come off of the steering box. A little RB motion stainless steel tubing, and some Pro Tech PE bolts and I was much happier. :D

Getting back to the steering, I machined a new center link from aluminum, and detailed it with Scale Hardware and RB Motion bolts. The little pitman arms there are DM #5 hard line with the ends smashed. I still need to paint the other one black, just haven't done that yet. The center link was installed and given a light was of Tamiya clear yellow heavily thinned. Tie rods are from RB and I added the double pinch colors on each one as well. Something new for me anyway. Once those were in I could add my sway bar arms and linkages. I also added my master cylinder plate.

And although they won't go on this car, here's my latest obsession. Machine brake rotors. Yummmmm...... ;D

Next up will be front springs, brake lines, shocks and the front and rear suspensions will be pretty well buttoned up.

Thanks for looking!

Clay, I really like your attention to detail with the steering linkage. I plan on machining my own U-joints for my steering linkage as well. Great work!

Thanks dude. Longest I've ever held my breath machining those things! LOL

Clay, that linkage is magnificent! You ought to consider an F1 in 1/12 or something like that - it would be quite something...

Wow Clay, the steering linkage is a gem.

Every single of your Nascar build is a step forward, a new standard.

Thanks guys. ;)

I machined four new shock tops from brass with the hex slots at the bottom. The bodies are from aluminum, and the rod end tops and shafts are from RB Motion. I'll add RB rod ends at the bottom once I determine the length. I'm also going to add the mfg decal to them once Mike's goodies sheet comes back.

Before the rear end can go in, I needed to make a new cooler. I machined one quick out of aluminum, added some lightening holes, holes for the hoses, and then dropped in some PE mesh. Now I can drop in the rear end, add the shocks and springs, and the rear suspension will just about be finished.

Next area I need to get caught up on is the engine. I mounted my engine plate, installed the water pump, and started getting my pulleys figured out. Also made a new oil pump. Valve covers are getting painted now, then I can get to plug wires, oil lines and all that good stuff.

One last bit I made was the remote oil filter. This was machined from one piece of aluminum, painted black and installed.

All my prep work is finally out of the way and I think I'm ready to turn this thing into the man of steel.

Rear end is finally done and ready to be installed, and I've got a bit further on the engine. With a long weekend coming up, I want to make some big progress.

The rear suspension is now in for good. Once it was installed, I added the shocks, chains, panhard bar, and coil springs. I also hooked up the rear end cooler lines. Big relieve to have this whole area done!

I also made some progress on the front suspension. Soft brake lines are on, coil springs are in, and I mounted the front shocks as well.

And finally, I got to do some painting. I masked off for the blue and after a few coats of white primer I covered the entire front with HoK Kandy Kobalt Blue basecoat. From there I masked off the cape patterns on the side and worked in the light and dark areas using some loose templates and some free hand airbrushing.

Next I masked off the nose and added the upper pecs area. Finally I added the "Six Pack" of abs. The sides were a piece of cake. The pecs were pretty easy, but those abs were a nightmare. I did them at least six times and I'm still not totally happy with them. But the thing to remember is that a bunch of this work will be covered with decals. So I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself.

Tomorrow I'll mask off all the blue and start on the red half. It should be a lot easier!

Come on, you applied the paint not for real. This is photoshop. Period!

Stunning progress, love all the machined parts. Just got the lastest Scale Auto & was stunned at your build, you built the clutch!!! freakn awesome!!
Q. what paint are you using for the airbrushing work, i read you used HOK Blue, but are you using HOK paints for the detail parts in the "body parts"?

Thank you very much guys! Still a long ways to go on the painting. You really don't know how things are going to go until you are almost done. Lots of luck involved!

I've been a way for a few days, but I finally got back to some detailing last night. I finished up adding all the hard lines and junctions for the brakes, and I also got my machined steering column and u-joints installed. Now the ONLY thing left on the front suspension remaining is the front suspension tethers. But those are a piece of cake. ;)

Anyway, here's how the front end is shaping up.

http://images51.fotki.com/v1584/photos/1/174078/6738670/P9159859s-vi.jpg

I started back in on the engine as well. I tied up my plug wires that were all over the place. I used Pro Tech wire and boots. Charlie's plug wire is just the best. It has this softness to it that lets it lay just perfect. I also got the tranny breather line installed as well. Next up will be getting the oil pump on and running all the oil lines. The hard stuff!

http://images51.fotki.com/v178/photos/1/174078/6738669/P9159861s-vi.jpg

And as I was working a long I've been doing a few test fits to make sure everything is going to fit. So far it looks like it's going to be an easy final engine install when the time comes. As long as my headers agree to it.
