1996 Talon Cylinder Head

hey Guys, thinking about buying a 1996 Eagle Talon 2.0 DOHC non turbo. It overheated, blew a head gasket, and warped the head.

I've rebuilt a 1993 eclipse before, same motor, only that one broke a t-belt and bent all 8 exhaust valves, so I know what I'm up aginst.

just was wondering if anyone knows a good place to get a new or used (reman) head.

The seller wants 650 for the car, and I could totally have it up in running in a couple days.

My sources all want 350-400 bucks for a rebuilt head and it only includes the valves and springs.

Any advice? Should I buy it?

If you built a 93 before and you're looking at a 96, it is NOT the same motor. 95-99 RS/GS/ESi comes with the 420a motor, not a 4g63. Completely different.

Its not hard to do. Mostly any machine shop will mill a head flat. Everything should still be good in the head if it only overheated. Also, check on eBay... full heads go pretty cheap on there.

Definitely go to a machine shop and get it done. Get cleaned up too while you're there. I wouldn't trust a head coming from eBay though.

Why not? I ordered 2 off eBay and sold my old one on there.

If you take the head to the machine shop don't skimp on anything. Have it cleaned, decked, and pressure tested(I think it only costs like $75 total anyway). I went through two expensive headgaskets before I got mine pressure tested and found a pinhole in my head. It was leaking coolant into my cylinder and blowing headgaskets like it was it's job.

Thanks for the info guys. I just thought the owner said that the current head was warped beyond repair. ???? So, your saying its possible for a machine shop to repair any head?

And BTW, thank you for clarifying david B, I guess I just assumed that the 2.0 DOHC in a 93 would be the same as the 2.0 DOHC in the 96. Are they still relatively similiar? (ie, exhaust, and intake manifolds all come off as one unit with the head?)

I guess I just want a project to get my head dirty.

thanks for the info, Much appreciated! Anywhere you guys use for used parts?

So david, you'r saying the 1996 2.0 DOHC is a 4g63? Just curious if I have the engine number when it comes to ordering parts.

(learned my lesson with a honda vtec h22a1, Parts guys, I tell ya.....)

No, any 95-99 non turbo trim (RS, GS, ESi) use the 420a motor. It's still close to being the same motor, still a 2.0 DOHC, but its flipped. The timing belt is on the passenger side, where as the 4g63 is on the drivers side.

Heads can be too warped, but would have to have a shop check it out.

A head can be warped beyond repair, but the only way to tell that is if he has already taken it to a machine shop and tried to have it fixed. If the head is still in the car, there is no way to tell.

I have a spare head off a 420a motor. Also have the cams, valves, springs, retainers, and lifter. The valves have 100k on them so they should be replaced. Head also has 100k on it but was never over heated and run great up till I pulled the motor. No Striped bolts but it is missing 3 cam retainer bolts. Which is no problem since you have a spare head.

Thanks for the great info guys! Much appreciated!

I'm not sure I'm going to buy the car yet, but SilvrEclipse, how much do you want for that head?

You don't want to sell it silvreclipse?

The car is still available, and I'm still contemplating buying it.

What all can be done to 420a motor? (as far as mods go?) Anything simple and cheap to make it a lot quicker? Can I turbo it?

Sorry guys, I'm pretty stupid when it comes to imports so bare with me, LOL!

You can turbo it. That's the quickest and fastest way to make the 420a fast. Silver and I both have a turboed 420a. Stock block is good for ~8-10psi or 215hp. If you've got the head off, go some internal work while you're in there.

You can piece a turbo kit together for about $1000. Just don't go cheap on important things or buy an eBay turbo kit.

Yea I will sell the head. How about $100 plus shipping? If your trying to have a fast car you may want to choose a better starting point. Yea the 2gnts have a lot of potential but it does take a good bit of cash to get it there. A few bolt on mods will make it pretty quick if thats all you want.

I recently replaced a head on mine, Got 2 COMPLETE 420a motors for 50$, One had a fried bottem end one had broke the tbelt and bent the valves, I found mine on craigslist, you might check there. I do have 2 heads though that havent been over heated ( to my knowledge), just bent valves, If you live in Iowa your welcome to have one. I just didnt wanna spend the money on the new valves/seats etc, knew itd be cheaper to get another head, also alot of pick and pull junk yards sell heads for around 100$ so you might check them. I paid 500$ for my 97 with the timing belt out, it needs painted something crazy though other then that its clean.

Does the 100 include the valves, springs, retainers, lifters and camshafts?

I relalize 100K it 'should' get a valve job, but this head would be ok for just a daily driver, nothing special, no mods, right? I just want something to commute with that gets better mpg than my GTP.

What do you mean by 2gnts? I'm pretty stupid when it comes to imports.

Valves are still in the head and have not been removed so they should still be sealing fine. Or as good as they were when I was driving it. I can throw in the rest of the parts as well if you would like. I have no use for them.

Ok, thanks guys!

I will think it over and let you guys know what I decide asap.

One more question. Like I said, I only rebuilt a 93 2.0 dohc N/A eclipse, and that was about 3 years ago. This car was taken apart already by a mechanic who diagnosed a blown head gasket and a warped head. After the owner decided to not repair it, the mechanic did not even bother putting it back together. If I decided to buy it, would I be able to upload images to you guys for assistance with things like vacuum lines and engine brackets since I was not the one who took it apart?

Of course. Use photobucket and put the images up there. There's a couple of us, mostly me and Silvr who have experience with tear downs/builds so we can walk you through whatever if you have problems. I don't know if I missed if you have one, but buy a Haynes repair guide.
