This isn’t much of a WIP but here are some in progress pictures.
The kit was actually not that bad of quality with some pretty good detail molded in.
The plastic is old and brittle and not the same kind that they use now so the glue and paint really do a number on it if you’re not careful.

The decals were cracked and I hope they still work.
So far I have only used the decals on the engine and had no problems with it falling apart but I did use some white glue on the decal to make sure it stayed down.

The kit was washed on the tree before parts were taken off and primed with white Mr. Primer.
All parts were sanded and primed again before sitting for 3 days.

Black parts were painted first with Tamiya black paint out of the can.
Mist coats were built up to keep a thin, even layer of paint.

Alclad colors were used over the black.
Aluminum, burnt exhaust, and steel were masked off and painted on different parts of the engine and radiator parts.

To create the unique CF used on the MP4/2 I used a nail file sponge...no idea what it is really called...to create rough scratches in the plastic on the under tray and behind the driver seat.
After it is painted black and dusted with pastels (brown/black/rust) it looks very close to the reference pictures I found.
I have also started to make my own decals and will print these and test on sheet styrene to see how it looks on top of the black with scratches. If it looks okay I'll apply the decals.

Some parts are ready for the CF decals and will be complete within the next 2 days.

The body was primed with Mr. Primer and painted with Finishers Foundation White.
The Mclaren Red is Zero paint and looks perfect as mentioned by all the other users in the group.
Zeros 2 part clear went on perfect and have been left to dry for 3 days (maybe more if I don’t get to it) before it will be buffed out and decals put on.

I have all the wires and plumbing mapped and cut and will begin final assembly by the weekend.

I need some help from the forum.
The radiators are just blocks and look really bad.
I dont have the tools to create my own photoetch parts so how would you suggest creating the radiators?

Looking forward to your suggestions!
Thanks for looking!

Looks great so far and the colours look perfect. You can buy some photo etch radiator mesh and cut this to size to give the radiators detail. It comes in a variety of scales and sizes. Here's a link to all what they have at HLJ

Here is an update.
The decals went on with no problems.
The paint was polished and decals applied.
I have an order out for the radiator faces and should get them in about 2 weeks.

Nice job you're doing there Chris, is it the Protar 1/24th scale kit?
I like the rough texture in the carbon fibre areas, how did you do that?

Thanks Rally yes it is the Protar kit.
I used a sponged nail file to scratch the surface and painted it Tamiya black.
It was drybrushed with a mix of copper/black/grey acrylics and a final pastel dusting was put on...the pastels didnt stay on long with all the handling but it looks good in person.
I am almost done now and will post pictures on Monday when i get back into town.

Time for an update.
I have decided not to use decals but to stay with the drybush technique to have a subtle carbon fiber look and I'm pleased with the results.

Final update before being completed.

Hiroboy 2 part clear...great stuff.

I will let this dry for about 3-4 days and polish it out.
There are more lines that I'm going to add (brake/throttle/etc).
Needs the belts added and a few more decals as well.

Enjoy.
Chris

I'll take better pics tonight and post them.
A few items left to do.
Mirrors
Sand Tires.
Radiator faces if the photo etched ever comes.
