i have a blown head gasket and clutch release bearing rattling on my 86 4x4 22R. I have a 92 2x4 22RE and was hoping i could just swap engine and tranny since i just put a brand new clutch kit in the 92. I was thinking of leaving it carberated so i wouldn't need to mess with the electronics on the 86. after lokng at some bks it seems the clutch assembly is the same in both;(Not sure about the tranny) can i just bolt on the transfer case or am i opening another barrel of whoop ass on myself?
Should i just change the head gasket and release bearing on the older engine?
please help. If i don't do something soon i will have to drive my gf's kia to work.
both are manual...

It is all about bolt pattern. If it lines up, go for it. If that trans needs electronics to move gears, then you have to remote switch the trans for it to work or use what OD switch is same color codes and use as many if the design lets you is wire up what is between cars.

The rest is hit an miss swapping the upgrade.

Back to bolt patterns and chassis under carriage fit and you are in! Transfer case and all.

You didn't have to mention it, it was obvious they are both manuals, since one has a "noisey clutch release bearing" and the other has "a brand new clutch kit".

You could swap the RE engine in and remove the EFI setup and replace with carb setup, but I think replacing the head gasket and fixing the clutch would be simpler.

If you pull the head and find it is cracked, then you could consider swapping engines, but again just swapping heads would make it easier.

As for the tranny/t-case, why would you do anything with it? You want to keep the 86 a 4x4, right ?
