1998 Olds Eighty-Eight high-speed fan doesn't work

I'm using my mother-in-law's 1998 Olds Eighty-Eight right now while my car is torn up.

The air does not work on the highest fan speed, otherwise works fine. But, we'd really like to get it working on the highest setting, though.

After doing some research, I had found that her car has a separate relay for the high speed fan. So, in hopes that would fix the problem, I went to the auto parts store and bought a relay for it.

The problem is...I don't know which relay in the relay center it needs to go to. Also, I don't know how to change the relay. It looks like it just snaps in and out, but wasn't sure. Some of them under the fuse block thingys doesn't even look like they can be accessed without removing the fuse blocks.

Does anyone happen to have the relay center diagram for this vehicle...the labels to what relay controls what? It has 3 relays on the left and then 3 blank spaces and then 2 more relays. Is it just a matter of process of elimination by removing a relay and see what it controlled?

To change the relay, is it necessary to remove the negative battery cable first?

I know it could possibly be something else as to why the a/c fan doesn't work on high, but I thought changing that relay would be a first step. Can anyone help?

Welcome to AF, no diagram on the relay box cover?

No, it does tell for the fuses which one goes to which, but the relays are right under the fuse blocks and there's no kind of diagram anywhere that I see.

Go to autozone.com, repair guides, that info may be there.

I did look at the repair guides at autozone.com but can't find the relay center diagram for that particular car.

Update: Somewhere on here, I believe, I found a diagram of a few of the relays that it was the third one over. Changed it out and it works!!!

But, the car wouldn't start the other day with my mother-in-law. She tried and tried to start it, but it wouldn't start. So, she got it towed to her house. My nephew took the starter off (assuming that's what it was) and took it and had it tested and it tested bad.

My hubby replaced the starter and the car still wouldn't start. He noticed coolant in the injectors...so the dreaded upper intake manifold. Well, he got that fixed.

All was fine and well...the car had the new starter, the new upper intake manifold plenum, oil/filter change, a high speed fan for the A/C. Then, my crazy nephew was putting that underneath shield thingy back on....and screwed through the darn A/C condenser and all the freon was leaking out. :shakehead
So, now that has to be replaced. Ugh! :banghead:
