Has the county installed GPS systems on the police cars so they can keep track on the amount of down time and where they police are located?

We have GPS and it is used to locate the vehicle and where the vehicle is going. Down time is not an issue due to the cost of operating the vehicle. If it is sitting still and not running, it is not costing anything to maintain the vehicle. We use about 3 million dollars a year in fuel, so shutting them off is a good thing.

You know how it works a policeman goes out of the county when its slow for a car part and a supervisors wife notices the car where its not supposed to be and they check. Somebody will be called in and chewed out.

Our officers have access to their units 24-7. As long as they stay in the county, they can drive them anywhere. That is one of the perks they have to work for out city. By the same token, most of our service calls are for off duty officers. Ford also started putting hour meters on the CVPI's. I think they started to install those in 2007, might have been 2006. They figure so many hours idling equals to so many miles so we can easier check the proiper maintenance time on the vehicle. Just more things to keep track of.
