The 1994 BMW 320i "Jägermeister" ÖTM (RoG)

Hey fellow modellers,

After the marvelous Hasegawa Ferrari 250 TR kit I stepped down into the hell of Revell fitment issues with this Red Bull BMW 320i from the Österreichische Tourenwagenmeisterschaft 1994 (ÖTM). I will try to make the No. 4-Luitpold-von-Bayern-Version.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2334.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2341.jpg

This kit should be well known in this forum since I posted about the true Red-Bull-color considering only Tamiya Spray Can Paints and about the issue with the yellowish decals (they are hanging in my window since monday now).

I started this kit with some work on the underchassis and on some parts of the interior. The underchassis has been painted pure white (TS-26)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2355.jpg

Since this is a curbside kit, there is only some minor engine detail on the chassis. I hate that for two reasons: no real engine and mainly because there is always a massive masking job to take care of, when you want to get the engine detail painted in a fair quality.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2357.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2359.jpg

After adding the tank, this is what the underchassis looks like right now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2368.jpg

I started to paint all the parts needed for the underchassis as well for the wheel-set-up. I just love these paint stands.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2364.jpg

The detail on the body is crude. Just look at this massive emblem Revell provided. It will be sanded down when I get to the paint job of the body.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2346.jpg

The rollcage doesn´t fit at all. Neither into the "interior-tub" as well as within itself. When you build the cage using the "nipples" as marked on the single pieces you end up with a cage that does not touch the interior in any places except the bottom. Since this will be visible from the rear and I don´t like a "hanging-gardens-rollcage", I changed the angle of the rear cross bar.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2354.jpg

Next up is the completion of the underchassis as well as the wheel-set-up. Wish me luck that everything fits somehow.

Comments are more than welcome.

Robert

Update.

The rear underchassis is assembled. A wash will be applied, when the front is done.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2369.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2371.jpg

Problems could have risen at final assembly. Some dry fitting showed that using the rear axle set-uo provided as it is in the kit the wheels won´t fit into the arches. They will stick out and the whole thing will look like a degenerated rice-mobile. For solving this the rear brake discs will be sanded down to provide enough room for the wheels.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/rear-brake-disc.jpg

See you next time.

Looks like a fun büild!

Wouldn't worry too much about the lack of engine on this one. E36's don't have the most interesting looking powerplants. :headshake A plastic cover saying BMW is most of what you can see.

The Revell kit is reböxed from Dragon and Hasegawa. It is by no means terrible, and with a bit of work can look terrific.

The röundel bump on the nose is actually accurate. It is the same size and shape as the aluminum parts I use to replace röundel bumps on other kits. It measures out just fine to the standard röundel BMW uses. It may look odd in plastic, but put a decal over it and it looks spot on. Measure it- if it comes out to about 3.3mm, it's fine. Standard röundels are just over 3" in dia in 1/1.

I'd say that the röll cage is a real weak point of this kit. It will take some work to get it to fit- but then I'm yet to find a kit with a röllcage that doesn't take some work.

I would have recommended cutting the plastic around the engine out between the engine mounting rails. From underneath, this gives the engine bay the depth it's otherwise missing. (It also makes masking the engine for painting much easier.) But as you've already painted it, it's probably not worth the effort at this point.

Looking forward to seeing it come together. The Red Bull scheme should look spectacular.

I haven´t sanded it off yet so your comment came well in time. Regarding this I will keep it. :iceslolan Once again it was a good idea to share ideas about the build in this forum - made me skip a mistake I would regret later on.

I'd say that the röll cage is a real weak point of this kit. It will take some work to get it to fit- but then I'm yet to find a kit with a röllcage that doesn't take some work.

Simple answer. Tamiya´s Mercedes Benz CLK-DTM "Original Teile". In that kit the roll cage fits into the "interior tub" like a knife through warm butter...

I´m not sure how it will look, when cut out. You´re right about the white excess around the engine: That is not very realistic. But besides that - since there won´t be an engine anyways - when you look from underneath you just stare into a big black hole around what resembles the engine. I don´t know if that looks better compared to what I have right now.

Maybe I could darken the white excess around the engine to make it a little more realistic.

Thanks for everybody´s input. It is well appreciated. I will order the color this afternoon and Andy - your rims go into the mail no later than monday.

To exemply my message concerning the lack of kit-quality (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=921077), I would like to show you regarding this build the odd modifications necessary to make the rear wheels fit in straight line with front wheels underneath the wheel houses.

Right rear brake disc and wheel hub before reworking:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/right-rear-before.jpg

After an hour of careful sanding and refitting numerous times the rear brake discs and wheel hubs.
right:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/left-rear-close.jpg

left:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/right-rear-close-up.jpg

Notice the difference in thickness as well as the odd shape. Building the rear supension system with the kits layout both rear wheels would point into different directions and no straight lining with the front would be possible.

Why does Revell construct a kit in a way that doesn´t build into a decent model without reworking the main alignment of wheels? Maybe my kit was warped and is an exception!  .
I don´t mean to moan and b***ch about this issue. I´m fine with reworking it and just wanted to mention this issue for any future BMW-320i-builders.

Oh yeah, front suspension and brake sets done and fitted. Same issues as with the rear but not as bad. Here we go:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2374.jpg

Cheers and happy modeling. I´m gonna go take a cold shower :shakehead :shakehead

Out of curiosity, have you fitted the wheels on the chassis with the body mounted? If I remember correctly, the wheel arches molded on the chassis have gaps to the wheel arches on the body- so the ones on the chassis shouldn't be used as your primary reference for correcting the suspension. If you match the wheels to the chassis arches, as soon as the body is installed the wheels may look verrry narrow....

Yep, I reworked the whole thing test fitting with the body mounted to the chassis. I did this because I was afraid of you just described. I´m looking for this tight touring-race-car-look w/o having the wheels stick out of the wheel arches. That would look "Fast-and-the-Furious"-ridiculous.

Thanks for the reminder though.

Well, small update.
I painted the rims and fitted the wheels to the chassis to find out whether there are some issues to expect during final assembly. I took some pictures and please judge yourself if the wheels look right or if something needs to be corrected. Right now it looks okay for me.

I also discovered that driver side A-pillar is warped.

Does anybody of you have an idea how to correct this tiny problem or will it fix itself once the windows are installed?

Hi Robert

I've had the same thing with a Tamiya XJ220 kit.
There are several ways to try and fix this, but the method I used involves a hair dryer.
I used a hair drayer to slightly heat the plastic. Be careful not to heat it too much though. By heating the A-pillar slightly it can be bend (carefully) back into the right shape.

You might even try this without heating the A-pillar, but it will be harder to get it back into shape without adding heat.

On the other hand, I don't know how soft the Revell plastic is (I've been told it's quite soft), so maybe it will indeed stay in shape when the window is glued in. But I wouldn't bet on it, if I were you...

Hope this helps.

Good luck in fixing that pillar.

You can of course see better than anyone, but I think it looks pretty good. I think it has that 'toüring car squat'.

I would definitely recommend against going near it with a hairdryer. Yes you can soften and change the shape of the plastic, but that doesn't mean you're likely to get it back to the desired shape. More likely, it would end up more bent and twisted than it is now. I would try to glue it in shape when you install the windows.

godfather23

Just to show that I´m still on this. I threw some primer onto the body. While doing that and later indpecting my work I found out that not only the A-pillar is warped. The whole body is leaning to the right...strange. Let´s see, how this will work out - another session of test fitting awaits me, I guess.

Looks very good so far. Whenever I have had warped bodyshells or bent pillars I place the body in a basin of very hot water (not boiling though, you should be able to still put your hands into it). And then carefully bend/twist back into shape a bit at a time, dipping back into the water after each go to soften the plastic again. The trick is not to do too much at a time to avoid breaking!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for showing me this. I will post pictures, when this one is painted and ready for decals.

Update and bad news.

Luckily the decals turned white again. But I found out that they don´t quite react well with my Microscale Decal Softener. It can´t be seen on the pictures but as soon as you apply softener to the decals they turn brittle and develop massive wrinkles. Nothing works yet. I hope I can manage that. In the mean time - this is how far I got up to now:

After 3 layers of Mica Blue:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2493.jpg

Problems occured after I took of the masking tape after painting the window trim. Touched up with decanted Mica Blue. Won´t be visible after the decals will be applied:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG2549.jpg

So what is left to do? Well the rest of the decals need to be applied, the windows will receive their black trim and of course clear coating the h*ll out of this one - making it shiny and even mory shiny...

Cheers

Instead of solvents try a hot damp cloth pressed over the decal, it will conform instantly with no wrinkles. Unless diluted with water Microsol is too strong even for Tamiya's current decals. I only use solvents down in panel lines.

This project just went to hell. What a great start into the modelling year of 2009.

This should be prrof that it doesn´t matter which clear coat product you use. I applied 5 mist and very light coats of Mr. Hobby Super Clear. I used that product on my CLK Original Teile and everything went well.
The plan was to go for about 10 mist and light coats. In the middle of the 5th coat the decals started to get crooked.

I have some experience with decals (CLK Original Teile and the Map de France M1), so I guess I just got unlucky. I hoped that the decals made in 1996 would be fine, but it seemed they weren´t as well as I thought.

So this is not a call for help - I used only some decalsoftener, working the most time using a hot cloth. And I had a hair dryer to fix the decals.
In the end I´m disappointed - but have the next decaling project already at hand and planned. I might get luckier using that Studio27-decals then.

Some desaster pictures:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG4226.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/knobi23232/BMW%20320i/CIMG4230.jpg

I might strip the body and repaint it in the future and name the whole thing: weekend racer. But not in the near future.

Cheers - and still motivated on decal jobs

What happened to you is why I am afraid of most clear coats. Why don't you try Gunze's 501 Topcoat. It's very similar to Future and is safe over anything. Or try Future(also known as Johnson's Klear) Future is very forgiving and be reworked and stripped with ammonia which is harmless to all paint except Tamiya Acrylics. Here is a link to a very complete guide to uses for Future.

Gunze Super Clear is a volatile lacquer, same as TS-13 - it will attack decals given half a chance. Thanks for verifying that for us!!! Lol, sorry, too bad man, just strip it off and try again, no biggie. Get some nice fancy decals too if you can find some - it'll end up being even better than before!

Hi Robert,

I agree, a disaster :shakehead .

Stripping the paint and redo is the only way

(maybe this is the revenge of RED BULL, who prohibited (some) dealers to sell RED BULL decals j/k, btw, some other dealers, who don´t live in Germany, still can offer those decals   : strange, strange )

Drats!! :(

I really feel sorry for you, Robert (although TBH there have been quite a few threads/posts over the past few weeks/months on the downside of SuperClear and the upside of TopCoat that I am surprised you decided to take the risk).

I think you should not put it aside but strip it, buy more decals and see it through. Don't let the clearcoat monster win! :D ;)

That's bad Robert, but don't panic! Try to get new decals from Revell. They have a good service! If you think that the new decals will make you troubles again buy this product from here : http://www.rd-hobby.de/shopping/catalog.php?id=820&item=12396 and brush over decals.
Stripp the paint and paint'it again.
If you want to clear again, use Gunze Sangyo Top Coat B 501. The only disavantage is that this clear will not dry so fast under the surface! So maybe you need to leave the body for some days in a warm place. Eventually try on some scrap to see how it works including the paint and some decals you don't use.
I wish you good luck!

Thanks guys, it´s nice to have some warm words. What bothers me most is the time put into it. Ah, well!

I used Super Clear because in the past I made some good experience with it. And after all I thought that I had it figured out. I was wrong - obviously. So Top Clear will be the product of choice for the next project.

I just contacted Revell and they told me that they don´t have any more decal sets. The kit is out of production since 8 years. In the end it comes down to me getting lucky on ebay or going on with the weekend racer idea. The latter seems alright with me - just not at the moment.

Next thing to do is to strip the paint - there have been some posts about this as well?? I might use the FAQ.

Wow, sorry to see it fall apart! A terrific shame, as I thought the Red Bull scheme would have looked terrific on the E36. And even more frustrating that the decals are not easily replaced. :banghead:

I've had builds go badly, only to redo them and have them come out rather nice (you may have seen my recent 993). It won't be hard to strip- 0,5l of alcohol (and a couple litres of beer) will make it all go away, trust me. :grinyes: And when you feel up to it, it'll be ready for you. The weekend racer idea is a fine one- but personally, I think the E36 might be fun in Jagermeister livery (http://www.hlj.com/product/MCLDC-197) also.

Robert,

Dip the car in alcohol, and redo it. It's rare enough to see a completed E36 model, especially racing ones. And you're off to a wonderful start already, so it would be a shame to put it away (my 2 cheap cents :D).

I'm waiting for my E30 M3 from Fujimi now, and I have some unused Jaegermeister decals so :D.

If you ever decide to do a Jaegermeister livery, Raceworks decals (Stradasports) have decal set that will allow you to do four cars total (BMW M1, BMW M635Csi, Porsche 962C, and Ford Gr B), the set can be had for $12.

Good luck again!

All three things have been accomplished: The darn thing is white again (well some blue stains remained). I had some beers yesterday night, while doing it and I ordered the Jägermeister-decal-set. I like that stuff more than Red Bull anyways. So I´ll have a fantasy weekend racer.

I will probably never build mine and if I do it it won't be this RedBull livery, so I might as well give up on my decal sheet if you feel like doing it again and defeating the the clear coat monster!

Thank you for your kind offer. But I would rather see build this one than depriving you off your decal sets. After all it was my fault - and I´m fine just going with a different livery than Red Bull. But thanks again - I really appreciate your kindness.

@ the Moderators: Is there any chance to modify this thread´s name into: BMW 320i Jägermeister (former 1994 ÖTM Red Bull)?

Cheers

Robert

Sorry. But I think that Jaegermeister livery sucks.
Take up the offer on the RB decals! :D

As you wish. I suggested it because I saw that you liked the livery and you were very enthusiastic about the model.

I'm not fond of the RB livery and I'm going to try to modify my kit in order to build one of the following ones:

I rather like the original BMW Motorsport liveries (white + red and blue, stripes or checkered flag) and I'm trying to build all the kits of race BMW's with that livery.

Döne. (Now don't make me edit your sig, also! :p )

Jano, if you need rid of the Red Bull sheet, I'd be happy to offer it a new home. To make you feel better about this thread, of course. :grinyes: I also love the M scheme- but the old Dragon/Revell kits are bloody hard to find!! I've seen a resin transkit to do the wheel arches of the M3s in your pics (Quick Skins, maybe?), but I couldn't begin to tell you where to find one. Shame, as they are awesome looking cars! :sunglasse

I was very fond of this livery in the beginning of the build. But the decal quality kind of spoiled it for me. Another thing: if I´d take this decal sheet from you, I´d feel obligated to finish this project - and finish it well. I just don´t want to disappoint you giving the sheet to me and never see this one happening in the end. And thanks again for offering - but as I see MPWR is collecting all of the M3-stuff. Can´t quite remember where my wheelset went to....Andy?? :evillol: :evillol:

Thank you for modifying the threads name. I thought that I needed to ask you and I also didn´t find an option to do it myself. Maybe I should have used the FAQ. Thanks again.

Well, I'm sure we can work out a deal. :naughty:

I'm lucky enough to have 2 of them M3 kits (one bought started + the RB one) and I'm gona try to mod them to E36 GTR and E46 GTR respectively.

The wheel arches would be interesting to get, but I doubt they are common as I didn't even see one on evilBay in recent times. Still wen I'll have enough time I'll attempt the mods myself.

Don't worry, I see what you mean.

Looking forward to see the Jagermeister BMW now! :)

Alright then. Here we go. I cleaned the body and prepared it using grey primer, a session 600, 1000, 1500 grid paper, a layer of AS-20 and a layer of TS-26 as well as another session of 1500 and 2000 grid paper. Then I applied 3 mist coats of acrylic orange layer followed by 2 wet coats.

Before starting to apply the decals I cleaned the body with sanding sticks and furious session of Tamiya polish to clean the rest of the body.

This is what I have so far. Appologies for the pictures (some with flash some without). But because of work I don´t do the modeling at home as I used to. The paint looks brighter in reality:

The whole build is now inspired by the BRUN BMW 635 Jägermeister Gr. A as driven in the 500km of Monza in 1984. The decals are from Studio27.

Comments and everything is welcome. I hope you like this change of livery. I was sceptical at the beginning. Right now I really dig the paint. Very orange.
