 Do I have to drop the pan to change the tranny fluid, if I do what do I need besides new tranny fluid. Sounds silly to ask but never worked on auto repair before, Thanks for your help

a transmission filter, drain pan, fluid, silicone sealant (or a trans pan gasket) brake cleaner, gasket scraper(or a rol-lock) and some rags.

take the pan off, removing all bolts from one side to the other so the one side of the pan can drop allowing a controlled fluid drain and pan drop. scrub pan and magnet, remove gasket material, hose off with brake clean. pay special attention to the pan mating surface, it must be very clean . pull off old filter from transmission and install a new one. scrape gasket material off, trying not to score the aluminum. spray brake clean on a rag and clean transmission mating surface. apply a line of sealant evenly around the center of the mating surface and on inside edges of bolt holes of the pan. stick the pan on ,evenly torque the bolts of the pan. fill the tranmission to the cold crosshairs of the dipstick, and your done.

BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER TIGHTEN THE PAN BOLTS. i only say that because i see a lot of first time jobs come in to the shop with a leaking pan, because someone pulled the threads out of one(or more) bolt holes by over tightening the bolts. they can only handle a max of about 20ftlbs.
