Misfire, smoke, loud ticking, hard to start

After doing some research, I believe its the timing belt going out with the tensioner but heres the case...

The engine stumbles while idling in drive. Not as bad when its in park under a lighter load.

The engine will misfire under a load at higher RPM's.

There is a loud ticking noise coming from the passenger side valve cover (sounds like from there).

I noticed some white smoke coming somewhere below the sparkplug holes and the exhaust manifold, its hard to tell where because it seems to just appear out of no where.

I pulled the "vent" line off the plastic intake that leads into the passenger valve cover and white smoke came out of there.

I tested the vacuum and it held steady at 16 in-Hg (tiny bit low but not bad). I tested all the sensors I could and none were dead. I recently did the wires and sparkplugs so I know those are good. Fuel pressure is good too.

But in the end, the engine doesn't run all that bad. Good power all around. Its just the stumbling idle and misfire at higher RPM's that kills it.

Just wanted to hear some opinions before I tear into her! Thanks

Timing belt is a definite possiblity, the white smoke is pretty odd though. What year and other specs?

Its a 93 and nothing else I can really say about it... I did replace the PVC valve recently too

From what I've also seen on many posts, the ticking you describe does resemble the tensioner, and I have seen many people having problems with misfire that was a result of the timing belt off a sprocket or 2. There was a series of posts back in June I think in this forum, where a guy went round and round, did everything but check the timing belt, finally when he looked at it, was off a couple teeth, very similar problem as yours I think. I don't know how different a '93 is from a 2nd Gen like I'm more familiar with, but I'm sure the timing belt is about the same. There are some real good mechs on this forum that know their stuff, I know 2eyecatfish has had some detailed blogs on the subject. There was one on this forum or on planetisuzoo.com that even had video clips attached for changing out a timing belt.

As far as the white smoke, besides the obvious of coolant, it just sounded odd the way you described the symptoms. Could it be coolant or did you already eliminate that?

here is a great thread on how to change the timing belt should you need it:

http://forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewtopic.php?t=16972 Thanks. After some more research, it really seems like the cause of everything is the timing belt.. just one question, is my engine a DOHC or SOHC? 93 3.2L... pretty sure its dual

FL 3.2L

SOHC. DOHC started in 1998.
