Changed fuel filter and gas brand...Great gas mileage!!

About a month ago i had changed my fuel filter and switched from Delta gas to Shell gas and have noticed a substantial difference in my gas mileage.

Before I was getting roughly 160 miles mostly city driving from a full tank down to the 1/4 mark.

Now I'm getting almost 250 miles on a fill up down to 1/4 tank.

Maybe somebody here knows how to do the math as far as miles per gallon?

Based on a fuel tank capacity of 18 gallons and @ ¼ tank (if the fuel gage is correct) in the past, your car would have consumed 13.5 gallons in 165 miles. 165 / 13.5 = 12.2 MPG. Using the same assumption on tank capacity, 250 miles would = 18.51 MPG. Evidently, Delta gas sucks, (literally) and the fuel filter helped!

It's the first time I changed the filter since i bought the car almost 3 years ago.

So doing mostly city driving and using the air conditioning i guess i'm right on the money with 18.5 miles per gallon? From what i remember this car gets 19 city & 29 hwy.

I thought the Lesabre had a 19 gallon tank in it? perhaps i'm wrong.

Thanks for your help HotZ28

It's an 18 gallon tank. My fuel mileage is around 19-20mpg right now, even though it is summer. Normal I get 20.5-22.2mpg. even in the winter doing mostly city/interstate driving. Maybe its the ethanol that they're putting in the fuel now. I no i don't need a tune up because I just did the spark plugs and fuel filter recently.

I also change my oil today and came across my first defective oil filter. I wouldn't screw on so I had to walk back to advance auto parts. I wasn't happy about that. It was a pureolater filter too.

Wow, that's a big name brand oil filter. must have slipped past someone at the inspection point?

I never change my oil myself so I dont even know what brand filter is on there.

I get my oil changed here: http://www.poshwashnlube.com/plainfiel (http://www.poshwashnlube.com/plainfield/oil.php)/oil.php (http://www.poshwashnlube.com/plainfield/oil.php)

I wonder if there's anything else i can do to increase my miles per gallon?

I never have taken my oil to a lube shop. I just don't trust then. Maybe u could start hyper-miling :lol2: . I'm 20 so my foot has lead attached to the bottom of it. Seriously I don't really know because I've tried many different driving styles and still don't see great improvement. Well I did one time I got like 23mpg. But the worst gas for my car seem to be Exxon. Why do I even have an exxon card. :screwy:

I only have a heavy foot on the highways. The wave machine is like a ride at the amusement park when driven fast on the highway :lol2:

LOL. You're right but park security (police) stopped me from having so much fun.

Driving habits play a huge part in gas mileage. With my '01 LeSabre driving back and forth to work (13 miles each way) I used to get about 24-25 mpg in the summer. With the price of gas what it is, I decided to change my driving habits a bit; slower take offs and letting off the gas well before a stop. This brought me up to 27-28 mpg on average.

Went on an 800 mile trip this spring and averaged a whopping 32 mpg for the entire trip. Mostly highway miles, though.

The point is, ease up on the pedal or pay for it at the pump.

First.... OP what is the Model year of your LeSabre? Even with he change the MPG's are a hair low... What do you get on the open road?

I have some bad driving habits... So I do pay for it a bit at the pump... So I say I have to pay to play.. But even with my bad driving habits I still do an easy 32 Mpg on the road...

I think there are a few things he may need to do to his LeSabre to bring it back into the proper range.. 18.5 is not bad, but could be better...

OP how hard are you on this car?

It's a 98 Custom.

City driving I normally drive slow and drive almost like an old timer. On the highway i have a heavy foot and like to do about 65 - 70 ans do alot of passing.
