That's the part that connects the top of the strut to the vehicle body. Here is a good link with an explanation

does that mean i have to replace the entire strut or would just replacing the plate help get rid of the knocking.

Your best bet is to remove the strut and the strut plate (mount) and go from there. If the strut is shot replace it if not than just go with the mount.

I think you meant to suggest that he removes the front strut assembly, not the strut itself...

so the knocking means that i will not be able to reuse the plate or is it knocking because of something else?

yes that is what I meant but obviously they don't know much about the strut assembly so it is easier to put it in terms they can understand.

As for the strut mount being reusable if that is the problem than no.

There is a Rubber piece inside and when they go bad it is because that is broken or busting out of the mount.

And don't forget to have an alignment done after removing/installing these parts!

I had the same problem on my 1992 Park Ave and it turns out that the problem was a bad motor/trans mount. You may want to open the hood and hold the brake while you give it a little gas and see how much the engine moves.

Although thats a possibility, the Mounts on the 92 are different from the 96..

But just the same its worth checking..

Being a 96, it may be worthwhile to replace the Strut and strut mount with bearing plate... I had this same issue until I replaced the Strut mount and Bearing plate... No problems since
