84 caprice dies at idle and stalls out in gearSolomon Cloud 08-17-2008, 09:02 AM back story the car was parked due to a leaking carb and blown radiator. I replaced the radiator and the carb was attempted at being rebuilt and i found out that the metering valve springs where rusted gone and I could not find any replacement... so i bought a used carb and installed it. The first thing i noticed with the "new" carb is that it makes a clicking noise when the ignition is on, i unplugged the top green/blue electrical connecter that goes to the float and the clicking stops (plugged it back in though). The car ran fine for initial test drive and i noticed the plastic linkage closest to the carb snapped from age, and I could not find a replacement. (i still cant find out what it does can someone help with that cruise control?nah). so now what is happening is that the car runs in low idle and dies in gear, adjusted the screw on the side of the carb idle was high but it did not stall out.. assumed this would be my temp fix until i get it adjusted right. my assumption was wrong, let the car sit outside and was time to goto work same problem, readjusted the idle and it got me to work, left from work same problem, readjusted the idle and got home. im just getting annoyed from this as it is my only car now and my only means of transport, also this beast is sucking up gas like water and my fuel tank went from half tank to near e in 2 days in a total of 33 miles. im assuming its the float but i cant exactly be sure, i dont remember if my old carb made a clicking sound when ignition was on or not. other things to know about the car is it is missing a smog pump and all the hoses connected to the system. I dont know if this would cause the problem or what but before the hoses where removed they didnt do anything anyway as the car is missing a cat and a pump anyway. i also get a check engine light once in a rare while while driving but it goes out when the idle dies down to a reasonable level. does anyone have any opinions? btw the engine is a 305 bhw33191 08-17-2008, 10:25 AM back story the car was parked due to a leaking carb and blown radiator. Mines in the shop right now getting fixed by an expert. The only difference is mine would run in gear but BARELY. All i can tell you is that i know that clicking noise when the ignition is turned on is normal. Mine isn't back from the shop yet so i dunno what was wrong but i can't wait to find out. One thing to check is if your catalytic converter is clogged. I'm almost positive mine might have been clogged because even when i adjusted the idle it didn't make a difference. bhw33191 08-17-2008, 10:26 AM One more thing, check all of your vacuum lines. I found and fixed a few leaks in my system and that helped a little. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
