85 22re having trouble

Hey guys, I have been having a lot of trouble with my 85 22re. Its hard for me to start. I would have to step on the gas pedal and try to start it a few times before it catches on. Then when the motor is running it idles really high and don't know what the problem is. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Have you done a tune-up ? (plugs, cap, rotor, wires, etc)

Check the TPS, it may be out of adjustment.

How is fuel pressure?

Is the spark strong?

Get a FSM, it has good step by step instructions on how to do these and other basics.

Fist of all, check your plugs, wires, and distributor conditions. Focus on plugs and at least regap them to the specifications. This is the single most common problem causing hard starts.
The idle check your air cleaner or even take it out to test and see where your idle is. As Fourwd1 said sometimes but not as often it can be the Throttle Position Sensor alignment. To do this alignment you will need a feeler gauge, multimeter and a manual with what the correct setting should be.

Yeah. I have already changed the plugs and wires, but haven't done the cap and rotor. I also took the intake manifold apart to clean it and the tps came off as I did that. When I put the tps back on, I just screwed it in. how is it supposed to be aligned.

I will be replacing the cap and rotor this weekend. Ill let you guys know how it is after that. thanks

I have replaced the cap and rotor and now the motor sounds really great. Although its still hard to start. I check the power coming to the cold start and there was no power. One last thing, I riged a push button on my truck, so you woul need to turn it to on and then push the button to start it. The other day I was playing with my ignition and I figured that if you don't turn the key pass on then the fuel pump won't kick in. So yesterday[9-4-08] I got up and start my truck the way I just explained and it started right up with no problems, but its hard to start it againg. can it be my injectors? thanks let me know anything will help. \\

To do this alignment you will need a feeler gauge, multimeter and a manual with what the correct setting should be.

To align the TPS you will need to reference the manuals on what the proper alignment procedures are.
Basically it is set the idle then with the proper thickness of feeler gauge between the set screw and throttle stop the TPS is turned until the circuit opens or closes. the pins to connect the meter to will also be covered in the procedure.

Sounds like your cylinders are getting flooded when you turn ignition on.
Try turning on ignition and simultaneously using your "rigged push button" to start engine. Delay between turning your key on and actually starting engine may be enough time for cylinders to become flooded, making it quite hard to start.

Better yet, just replace your ignition switch with a new one and can the "rigged button".
