i just got off work and opened my car door and there is a very strong smell of gas which i have never had before. but my car did sit around in a shop for 7 months getting rust taken out. should i check my spark plugs?

why check plugs? the only thing thats going to tell you if it was fouled out and that usually you don't smell gas ecepted the blue smoke comming out the back. no sounds like a gas linne so i'd get under and see where it's at and with car started but be carful when your under there make sure it's sacured right.

Have you checked the evap system for continuity, i.e. the purge valve, canister, or any associated vacuum lines? Chances are, if you're smelling gas vapors real strong, this is where the issue lays. Look at the bottom of the canister to see if there's any liquid on the inner fender below it.

taking it to a shop tommorow lost a half a tank of gas overnight :(
