Hey guys, I am new to the forum, so go easy on me ;-) I have an 01 Grand Prix GT, auto (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/#) trans. and 116K miles. The ABS light is constantly on even after changing the front wheel bearing (the one the dealer said was bad) thinking it was the speed sensor. Are the wheel speed sensors located in the bearings or is the sensor located outside the bearing? If so where could i find it? The GP has also started a weird hesitation. It seems to happen more as I accelerate, but even happens unexpectedly on a level surface with the cruise set. Does not do it in park or neutral (that I've noticed), and after going through the gears manually while driving it seems to do it in second gear after coming out of first. I have started to fear a tranny problem. I hope not though. I hope that there is possibly a simple fix for this. I have already dropped $200 for a mechanic to just clean the MAF and tell me it was fixed, discovering that after driving out the garage it was still doing it. They couldn't find any codes or other issues. Has anyone ever seen or heard of this before?

I disconnected the MAF switch and it ran better. Then after like a day I started the car and it wouldn't stay running. I reconnected the MAF and the car ran but I could only get it up to like 30mph. Does this mean the MAF is shot? How hard and expensive is it to replace the part on my own.

My second problem is sometimes when I am going around a corner I hear a very noticable moan and the brakes get kind of jumpy. Before when this problem would happen the ABS light and Trac Off would come on together and the problem would go away. Any idea what this could be?

I recently visited a GM dealership and their mechanic said I needed a new left frong wheel bearing hub assembly and catalytic converter. They quoted me about 1500 for both. Does this seem a little high? Could I do this by myself?

Also with the moaning they said it could be a gear in the steering system. How common is this?

$200 just to clean the MAF?!?! I would go back to that mechanic, string him up by his cajones, and beat him like a pinata. To clean a MAF, all you have to do is remove the MAF (two screws) and spray the elements with MAF cleaner (about $3-$4 a can), maybe 15 min total time.

Your car is covered under an extended warranty for the converter, as 01-02 GP's have a known issue with the converters where the substrate brakes off and plugs the exhaust. The extended warranty is 7 years/120k miles so you're just under the wire. Here's a link to the details of the extended warranty so you can show your stealership's service advisor.

Wow thanks for the quick and helpful post. I called Pontiac directly and they confirmed that I should be covered. However, when I called the dealership back they said I'm only covered up to 80,000 miles. My car has 117,000 miles so I'm currently fighting that battle.

Print that link I posted, and take it with you to the dealer.

I called Pontiac directly and they put me on hold and called the dealership directly and set up the appointment. They were very responsive and helpful I was actually very surprised.

That's cool, occasionally GM does something right!

Ok so the catalytic converter is now fixed and the car is running pretty good. Now though I have a check engine light. I went to the Autozone and had the codes read and they indicated there was four things wrong. 1st was multiple miss fire, a second was a circuit failure?, and the last 2 were both oxygen sensor. Did they install the converter wrong or just not hook up the oxygen sensor? Is this safe to drive? how hard is it to change an oxygen sensor?

Best to post the exact codes.

I would almost bet that these are history DTC's and will go away after a couple drive cycles.

Or you can have the codes cleared and see if they return.
