Does the fan run on vacuum?

On my 97 I believe the air settings change on vacuum? What about just the fan? Sometimes when I turn on the air, it doen't work. I turn it off and on and it will work (sometimes). Or I just leave it and in a while it will all of a sudden start up. I can feel cool in the vents, like the air conditioner is working, just not blowing out.
Does the fan work on vacuum, or is that electric?
Can anyone explane the system to me? What wold u check first, second?

The blower fan for the HVAC system would be all electrical. Does the 97' lesebre have the climate control system? maybe the climate control module is the problem.

Do you have auto climate control, or the manual system? The fan is "electric" regardless of what system you have; however, the auto control system uses a blower control module and the manual system uses relays & resistors to apply current to the motor. When the fan will not run, try tapping it with a hammer to see if it will come on. (Be sure the ignition is turned ON, as well as the blower fan switch) If the motor comes on after you tap it, you need to replace the motor!

Do not have climate control. The fan made noise about a year a go, then stopped (making noise).

Is there a way to get a new fan that pushes more air?
My friend has a 2000 that has 16+ increments for air speed. My 97 has 4. The lowest 2 hardly put out any air.

Sounds like the little square relay or resisitor for the blower motor is going out. It is located in the line of relays along the firewall. I had one go out last winter and was surprised to find out that they cost about $20. I had substituted one of the others temporarily, which resulted in only the high speed or off. Needed defrost at the time. Had to ge the right one that allows the variable fan blowing speeds. I suppose it could be the blower motor or that relay. When I could not get mine to work, I ran 12 volts directly to the fan and it kicked on, so I knew it must be the relay.

The fan in my ac reverts to blowing out the defrost sometimes when on the highway on long uphill grades. This is due to a vacuum issue. The fan is still blowing, but, I believe there is a leak in that vacuum junction up behind or under the glove box-where the tubes meet. Once on the level again, it begins blowing out the vents again.

OK, thank you. I like it when something is specific like what you posted. I'm going to take out the fan and look at it. Maybe I can see why it made noise last year. Could even be something lose, but it sounded like it was going out, like a bearing or something.
Could you see anything wrong with the relay, or test it anyway?

After I ran 12 volts to the fan, I swapped out the relay out of my wife's 97 Lesabre (we have two 97 Lesabres) and it worked fine. I tried to squirt a bunch of wd40 into the relay, but it did not help. Had to put hers back in her car though since she needed it to go to work. I don't know if there is a test method for the resisitor.

At the time, I thought I would just pick one up for $3 or so at the auto parts store. Had I known it would be $20, I probably would have planned to go by the salvage yard because they probably have tons of them.

Your issue does sound more like a blower motor issue if it is making noise. They are usually fairly easy to replace. I have not replaced one on our Lesabres, but have on other vehicles. A little wd40 in the fan motor might help it last a little longer.

Pretty steep. The last one I bought was about $15-20 and it was either for a Ford truck or an Oldsmobile-can't quite recall. It was probably about 7 years ago and it was from O'Reilly's. Salvaged might be the way to go.

Not again. I went out to pull the fan assembly, to look and see if I could see anything I could fix (something lose?).
I took off the plastic cover, it broke apart in pieces. I then found out I can't get the fan out unless I take off the mount on the back side of the motor. It's way down in there harder then the plugs.
It's 95 out and I was working in the sun. I put a couple bolts back and decided to forget about it.
I want to be patient, have a success working on my car, but I now have more problems then I started with. I have been kind of depressed lately, so this is a real discouragement for me. There is a hose that goes to the plastic cover that I'm guessing is for cold air. Great.
Can't even go to a wrecking yard, since the one here is closed on weekends.

Cheer up chap and don’t be discouraged by a few minor set-backs. Depression is simply a fabrication of some psychoanalysis which prey on the less informed. Get over it; S*it Happens! When working on cars, things will go wrong and it is not worth worrying about. Sometimes, it is better to stop what you are doing, take a break, then think about what you can do to improvise, adapt, & overcome the obstacle.

The plastic cover is not that necessary and the hose to the motor can be replaced for 5-bucks. You should get a new hose at the dealer. Most JY replacements will crumble, just like yours did. Think positive and you can be successful!

I still have the hose in good condition. No place to put it since that part crumbled. Without that hose, it still blows cold air!
I re-read the repair info and now I see where it says I have to remove the bracket.
I guess I'll try it again when I get the parts.

That's aggravating working in the sun. I've done that recently around here trying to fix some hay equipment that I need right now. The tools get so hot, you can't pick them up without gloves on. Better to start working on it right as the sun is coming up.

I hope it is not as difficult as the deal I got into trying to replace the brake power booster on my wife's Lesabre. There were 4 bolts way up under the dash that were difficult to see and even more difficult to get a socket on. Sometimes its best to go slow and plan on taking some breaks. It's good the ac is still blowing cold.
