98 overheating at highway speeds only

My 98 2.2 has a problem with slight overheating when at speed. It runs nice and cool until you get up to highway speeds. Can do 65-70 for 10 miles before the heat starts to build pushing the temp gauge to ¾ or just over. Slow down and it cools down. Sat in traffic today for 20 minutes with A/C on high outside air temp at 101 and it ran nice and cool till I got out of traffic for a couple of miles at highway speeds. Gauge went back to running hot. Fan runs on high with A/C on.

I've replaced the fan motor, radiator, coolant, temp sensor and thermostat.

I think it's down to one of two things, air trapped in the system or water pump.

What’s everyone take on this?

i had this exact same problem. there is air trapped in your system, this is a painfully easy problem to fix on your car

there is only 1 bleeder valve, once you find it (make sure your engine is OFF) loosen that little bolt (do not unscrew completely, you dont need to) and coolant will start coming out the side of it, just let it sit there for a few minutes and close it back up. while its bleeding out you will wanna keep an eye on your coolant resevior and make sure to keep that topped off (to the full line anyways) throughout the entire process

so did you replace all of those things because of this single problem? if so i bet you'll be kicking yourself for a little while. those radiators are bitches to replace

Thanks for the info. I was hoping air in the system was the cause.

I replaced the thermostat two years ago as it was bad. I went through 3 before this board informed me to buy a “quality” NAPA stat not the cheap AZ ones. Radiator and coolant was due to a small finder bender. The fan motor stopped working a while back.

I don’t drive the car on the highway as it’s an around town car but with gas like it is, I had to start driving it to work and that’s when the problem showed it’s head.

Thanks again for the advice. I’ll bleed the system this weekend………….
